That is the question!
Just bought a bulk load of Kona Frames amongst which are some old Units and Unit 29s I fancy building one up for myself another SS training tool as im really regretting selling my Blender. I just don't know whether to have a dabble with the 29er or not, Ive got all the kit should i build up a standard 26 but a 29er would leave me needing new wheels and forks. Training ride is basically a quick loop round Rutland Water so its never going to see any proper action. I don't really know much about 29ers and always like to try new things so something is swaying me towards the 29, I just don't know if I can justify the extra cost for the parts I need. Are they really that much better/worse or different to a 26?
Rutland Cycles is showing they have a unit 2-9 in stock on there website maybe you could convince them to have a little spin on it.
Ps. Have you still got those x.9 shifters you had advertised?
Very different to a 26er, if you've got most of the bits the 29er is worth a go. You'll love or hate it...no middle ground IME.
I hated it, but am having another go with a new Salsa.
Wheels arrived today mate, thanks again.
Cheers Will, I work at Rutland Cycles ๐
Weve got them listed on the Website but dont carry them instore just get them when required, weve got a Rockhopper 29er on the demo fleet but its the wrong size. Should be one that fits me at the Demo weekend this weekend so i can have a quick spin but just wanted some other peoples opinions.
Still got the X.9 Shifters, did you email me about them?
Daffy, i figured that might be the case, guess ill just have to give it a go! Those wheels should have been there on Friday, was there a failed delivery then or did they just arrive today? If they just arrived today let me know and ill claim the shipping costs back and send it your way.
I have a kona unit 2-9er 2007 but I found it a little tame. I preferred my kona cindercone SS. It might however be just geometry as the cone is 18" frame and I and the unit was 16' because I thought I might struggle with the standover height. I am 31' inside leg at 5 10.
The cindercone 26 wheel 18" frame 1997...
Good to know about the unit i was thinking of using cycle scheme with you when if i can convince my employer into using it instead of wheelies or halfords and really wanted a quick ride on one (even if it was just around the showroom). Strangely enough the argument im using with my employer is with a physical shop you can see before you buy unlike wheelies lol.
And nope just spotted the ad when i looked at your profile, i will mail you about them now though.
Cheers Aw
Id be going for an 18" (had lots of Kona 18" HT in the past and they all seem to be bang on), standover wont be an issue im 5'10 but have 35" IL (yes i know im shaped like a girl!). 16 would be too short, certainly seems close for you looking at your saddle position!
Will, will check my mail in a minute, if your fairly local id have no reservations what so ever about ordering one in for you (with no obligation) for you to try. If i buy one and like it ill no doubt start selling the things anyway! 16",18",19" all in stock at Paligap 20",22" are TBC.
thanks v10 - yes it was just too upright for me and yes therefore probably too small a frame. I had to buy a longer seat post to extend the saddle enough to get full extension of my legs on down pedal stroke.
Mine is for sale Will if you are interested or wanted a test run...or anyone else for that matter!
BTW just fixed the puncture ๐
the theory of the rollover obstacles with the bigger wheels does really work and fits in nicely with running a rigid fork (less need for front suspension).
They do carry through the ride - what I mean by that is the bigger wheels give you more momentum. I did however find mine not as responsive on fast single track as the cindercone.
Cheers v10, will have to wait on this cycle scheme first though. When it does it will either be the unit or a charge duster ss (i suspect you've probably got a hotlines account).
aw not unless your supporting the governments bike to work scheme lol.
i have a kona unit 26 SS and my mate who i ride with has the Unit 29er. I would say both are evenly matched. in some areas i am faster and in other areas he is faster, although i sometimes have to work harder than him when the conditions get bumpy as he seems to roll over small bumps alot better.
Jason - i found the same comparing the two konas although not both units. I would say the 26" felt faster but I suspect the 29er was actually faster. I am going to run a test soon head to head so watch this space.
Will you are quite welcome to try the unit without any obligation to buy ๐
No worries Will, yeah we do Charge (although for some reason they aren't on the website, ill get a grom onto that tomorrow!). Usually have a few blenders of various formats in stock across the stores so that wont be a problem. Just drop me a line nearer the time and ill get you sorted.
Cheers for the info Jason, its always imagined they would be a little bit slower to get going and in the tech stuff, but once up to speed a bit quicker and smoother on the rough, what you say seems to tally with that. Sounds like it will be best for the riding im doing but ill have a dabble at the weekend and see how i get on!
aw if you were a bit closer id take you up on that.
Cheers v10 ill be sure to do that.
Luke... Defo this morning was the first attempt that I'm aware of.
No delivery slips, no message with the concierge.
Argh choices choices!

Rode a few 29ers at the weekend, they fly once up to speed but felt really 'dead' under acceleration.. based on that i thought id probably plum for the 26 but having finally got round to having a look at the frames today while they were out for photos the 29 frame in the green looks loads better, some im going to have a punt with that and see how i get on ๐
Daffy ive made a claim on that late postage, should have it back in the next few days and ill refund you.
Resurrect- where could I find the standard Unit frame (not 2-9er?)- ideally a 18" and you can convert to gears cant you?
The green ones are the ones that break yes? Seriously.
