Hello,
Are any of you nice folk going to the Kona Mash-up in Afan valley in December? Or has anyone taken part in any of the previous weekends? This will be my first comp and im not sure what to expect, I know its a mix of xc and dh. Im off to Afan in October to try the white run out and Im wondering if it might be a little over whelming. I will be riding a hard tail but was wondering if a full sus would be better.

I raced the first one last year. I was in the technical class riding a PA, I reckon it was only the black run where a full susser would have been a whole lot better (my downhill bike is also a HT so I may be biased). If you're entering the Enduro cat' I'd say a hardtail would be fine. There were quite a few folk pushing DH bikes around wishing they hadn't bothered.

The whole event went well and had a good vibe, just a shame the timing turned out to be a bit of a mess. I'd say that it wouldn't be a bad choice for a first event as long as you like trail centre type riding.

The timing involves censor mats, it sounds a bit weird on the website. Just did the Northface trail ar Grizedale forest this week and really enjoyed it. Im a bit slow and would worry that would piss off other riders, but we all have to start somewhere right?
Thanks for the advice, as long as it has a good vibe it makes the time away worth it! I will take my HT, dont really go in for DH anyway.

5 inch travel bike (back and front) is probly going to give best results on both...even the black run is quite gentle and uses alot of peddling

Its a great first timers event! I've done the two that have been held so far and will be doing the December one too. I had a great time and have found myself getting more serious about riding in general since the first one.

I had a crack at the Brechfa Enduro too, that was tough but did alright considering i didn't take it that seriously.

These are great events if you want to dabble in abit of racing. Really want to do the UK round of the Avalanche Enduro one year too.

Personally i wouldn't want to do it on a hardtail, i think at least a little travel helps. Rowan Sorrell won the Tech. category on an Orange 5 last year and managed 10th(i think) in the Enduro category! Enduro winner was Rob'Box'Cooksley on a 100mm travel Ram bike.

I did the one earlier this year, great event format but as others have said the timing system left a bit to be desired. Very relaxed atmosphere and the fact you can run the sections as many times as you like to improve your time is pretty good. You should have done the STW weekender as that was even better!

I try to forget about 'those' timing issues ๐Ÿ™‚

I actually preferred the mass start at 10:00 am method that was used at the Brechfa Enduro.

Will anyone laugh if I get off and push at very scary/hard bits? I intend to prepare myself but as its a first time for me.

The only 'scary' bit is the bottom of the black run (technical class only), and then only if you are tring to go fast as you can. It's a trail centre so everything is rollable.
