I've just seen this on BBC news and I'm torn between thinking that some kid's going to get hurt and a sneaking admiration for a group of young people acting in a subversive but outwardly positive fashion.ย  Thoughts?

"Hundreds of young people were cycling down Battersea Park Road," she said. "Some were doing wheelies and standing on their bikes whilst moving."

Kids get hurt riding mountain bikes in the woods. What they're doing is really no more dangerous than what plenty of other kids (and adults) are doing. And if it is, we should really rethink our cities, because kids should be able to ride their bikes in the way kids do. All credit to them.

If only I had those wheely skills!

Anythings better than kids stabbing each other.

With police & social services decimated by austerity, solutions have to come from within the community itself.

I wish I could have joined in... but my wheelie skills aren't up to the job.

Just imagine being a kid and the feeling of empowerment it would give you to do something like this. No rules. Freedom of expression. Being on the national news. Amazing.

Kids don't WANT to go round stabbing each other, and very few do. Kids just want to tool around on their bikes. We should let them.

I can't see too many negatives to be honest, let the nippers enjoy themselves and twice a year isn't going to cause too much inconvenience surely? Hope they had a great day.

Wonderful story, I would love to have been a random pedestrian walking around the city and chanced upon that.

Great idea, and good on the young uns!

Oh to be a teenager again!

Having grown up in an area that had pretty bad knife crime, I'm all in favour of this. Young lads are fizzing balls of energy that needs an outlet. That energy is coming out one way or another. Better it's doing something as relatively harmless as doing some pretty rad wheelies down the road than getting involved in proper mischief like gangs, crime, drugs or knives.

Close the roads to traffic let them wheelie away.

I was in London on Saturday and saw them going across Tower Bridge. Caused havoc, but only for a few mins. Good to see kids organising themselves and doing something positive to address problems they face.

This forum still needs a like button!

Probably doesn't do the image of 'cyclists' any good, but then that's a problem with the observer not cyclists, they wouldn't tar motorists with the same brush if they saw a load of yooofs ragging an XR2 and a Nova around London.
