Hi Guys.
I'm looking for a pair of kneepads i can use for XC, a bit of street, snowboarding and rock/ice-climbing.
Now i know this is "just" a bike forum so i'll specify to "none bulky good and flexible protection".
I've been screen-looking at the 661 Kyle Straights and Evo's and on the Race Face Dig's.
Problem is that i live in a country that doesn't seem to be selling either anywhere so i no "hands on" views to go by.
Any thoughts on theese pads? - or maybe better alternatives..?
Regards
Chrisitan
POC's? its what i'll probably be getting when the 2010 stuff lands.
I tried on the 661's but ended up with some POCS as they felt more flexible.
You do get warm knees (even at this time of year) but my fear of ****ing my knee up further has subsided.
I use the 661 Kyle Straits and like them a lot. Very comfy..
Just got some Evos, very light and comfy, not sure they'll offer the sa,e protection as the Kyle Straits but should take a few knocks.
I've got 661 Tomcats that I use for DIY, skiing and biking.
For biking and skiing I've removed the hard knee-cups and replaced them with a cut-to-size square of roll-mat stuff. They are excellent and don't get too warm, but the sizing comes up quite big. I'm a large in stuff normally but would go for a medium.
661 Kyle straits. Ace.
661 Evo's. Light and flexible enough for all day rides even in hot weather
+1 for the 661 Kyle Straits they are great, I forget I'm wearing them sometimes.
+1 for Kyle Straights - don't notice they are on + keeps your knees warm at the moment
How's the sizing on the Kyle Straights?
quite small i found.
also be aware that they dont really have a hard plastic inside. its more of a flexy sheet akin to a thin/flexible tuppaware really, plus a bit of padding.
not really super protective in the event of say, um... hitting your kneecap on a tree stump and shattering your patella.
hmm that doesn't sound too reassuring!
yeh. i cant guarantee that any other pad would have done better. but they are a LOT less sturdy than my old TLD bones. so who knows.
I can nearly walk without limping now, 9 months later.
Ooh, on that note i have a SH set for sale!
I love my Kyle Straits, I don't forget I'm wearing them but it's not far off, they're no bother to wear for all day long distance rides etc. The new Fox ones, and the Troy Lee equivalents, are probably very much the same. I don't expect huge 1st rate protection from them, but that's not really what they're for, they're for giving a good level of protection without drawbacks.
One thing I'd say is there's no point in going thinner or smaller- one of the reasons these sorts of pads are so comfy is that they're a little bigger, so they have lots of room to move, and a good natural shape which doesn't need to be brutally tight to stay in place. Most smaller pads end up being less comfortable and more intrusive. Same with arm pads for that matter.
Thanks everyone!
The Evo's solve the issue of being soft and flexible but also providing enough protection. The protection is some material that goes instantly hard on impact, so most of the time they are just like wearing a knee support, but still offer good protection in a crash. Also, they are not made of neoprene like the Kyle Straits, so are not too hot and sweaty in summer
fuse soft cap pads are cheap and very comfy (i wear them as knee warmers on mtb and under jeans whilst riding bmx)
