[#3792701]

Afternoon....
I wont lie, im by no means the raddest rider but I like to go fast and that can lead to falling off. That in itself dosnt worry me. However....
I have over the last 2 years had a couple of serious knee injuries and dont need any more.
So which pads out there... A) work well B) offer a good amount of support and C) dont look like they are from Darth Vaders spares bin (ive got those already!!)
Suggest away hive mind!
Cheers

i use 661 kyle strait, they have been good so far, after a few tumbles.. also they're OK on longer rides without getting uncomfortable or too hot.

speedy replies!
I have looked at the gform ones in the lbs but would like something witha bit more support (been wearing a hinged knee support for nearly a year till recently). How do the poc ones feel in that regard?
Hopfully see what another lbs has in stock this week for the 661's
Cheers

If you need support forget knee pads and stick with a good brace

Pics won't offer more support than a neoprene sleeve, tbh

Im back running and riding without the scaffolding now thankfully.. Just want a little support and some protection for my knees.
I have got some bioskin supports but they bunch really badly when cycling so if I can find a set of pads that does both then thats a win.
Cheers

Fox Launch Pros.
A little bulky but the pad does not press on the patella. Reasonable amount of support too.

Slight thread hijack but interested in opinions on knee pads that also give shin protection like:

troy lee lopes
Nukeproof critical knee/shin
Fox Launch Pro Knee/shin
Poc bone leg (probably out of the question as too expensive)

Would really like something that gives a bit of calf protection as well (like the poc does) as tend to have a habit of catching my pedals on them.

Views?

plus 1 for fox launch pro. No support value but comfortable protection that's saved me on several nasty impact spills to date!

None really offer any support- in fact the biggest part of the design process is making them interfere as little as possible with the leg.

Still a fan of the trusty Kyle Strait- all-day comfortable. and very wide protection (very few pads have as much on the side as they do, and anyone who's had a top tube smack the side of their knee in a crash knows why that's a good idea). Not the most protective but still very effective. And not expensive.

I guess it may be a case of finding something that wont slip over the bioskins. And adapting (cutting holes out of the back) the bioskin to stop the bunching effect. Had hoped there was an easy solution.....

Fox launch pro's all the way for me. There comfrtable to ride hours in and have a Kevlar Knee cup to protect the knee cap a bit more than the usual foam pads. I keep forgeting i hav ethem on and drive driving home with them on.

Fox Launch Pros - a bit on the tight side around my mighty oaks, but fantastic pads for the price..

The Rage is the new Kyle Strait. And the Fox Launch Pro is basically a KS/Rage with a hard cap in the padding

661 evos are the worst knee pads i've had, they bunch up,offer little protection and fell apart after not much use. Had much more success with the kyle straits, my mate has the newer version which are similar (he seems to think they are a little bulkier though), i've just bought some fox launch pros to replace my 2 year old kyle straits, i haven't ridden in them yet but they are a nice fit and have a hard knee cap so a bit more protection than the kyle straits.

I think its the riot that replaces the KS

BTW when they say they have internal hard cap does that mean they have proper protection for the knee cap? Does anyone have them?

Oh the reviewer on there says they support and protect!

Could mean anything tbh, they quite often said the Kyle Strait had a hard cap.

GT900, Riots don't have side protection like the Rage/KS

Those Thors aren't that bad in real life. Probably are the closest thing you'll get to a support that's a pad

I used to use the Thor Force pads following a break of my tibial plateau.
They offer fantastic protection though not to the shin. They articulate fairly well but are relatively bulky and I only ever used mine for dh. After I got over the immediate paranoia about hurting my knee again I sol them and switched to Kyle straits. I don't think I'd wear them for xc but for dh they are good. Some days they kept slipping down, some days fine.

I need them for mainly agro trail riding and (once ive found my skills again) light dh duties. If I have another knee injury I could loose my job.... Royal mail sickness procedure is so understanding....

I bought a set of six six one race lite knee/shin pads a couple of years ago having been through a similar thought process to the OP. I didn't wear them other than once when I decided I didn't like them.

Now I just make sure to fall on my face if I crash, it'll only make me look better.

I was in a similar position and after 2 years off the bike, following 4 operations on my left knee, I took no chances when I was able to get back on the bike and now wear one of these:

Asterisk Knee Brace

There expensive and looks cumbersome but once your riding I don't notice it, and the expense is worth it if it means I can ride again (which was in doubt for a long time). I wear a 661 Pad on the right knee too, and don't go riding without them, even on easy XC rides.

Mtbscoop....Wow! Thats a serious bit of kit... I was lucky that I didnt need any ops. Just time away from all strenuous activity (which included work!) Now im back and the knees are getting much stronger, and ive ditched the hinged support I have been using for most of the last year, hence the desire for some support but not at the expence of the muscles round my knee. Cheers tho as I could have easily been in your position 2 years ago myself. Hope its getting there

Fox launch pro for me. Get a little hot over distance, but still comfy TBF. Anyone tried the elbow pads?

I've had the Fox Launch Pro's and now the 661 Kyle Straights.
Used the Launch Pro's for a week in Spain last yr and had trouble with them rubbing on my tendon behind the knee, gave me a painful spot of tendonitis actually.
Sold them on because i reckoned they were too big and caused the above problem.
Bought the KS's, better fit but still cause me some trouble on the tendons, i used them on Saturday and againlast night and i now have matching skinless bits behind my knees ๐Ÿ™

Maybe it's just my legs...

Anybody used the new nukeproof pads which combines the flexy knee bit with a harder plastic shin saver? Look like the best of both worlds to me
