I want to know who regularly rides an old bike say 5 years plus.

In Surrey where I ride it seems everyone is on something brand new with every bit of Carlos Fandango kit to boot. I bought my bike to last and it has, since 2000, anyone else with me or am I in desperate need of something new and I just don't know it???

all my bikes are over 5 years old in their original guise, just newer bits in place of those that failed or no longer met requirements

generally buy kit that lasts in manufacture and design

myeldest son is still riding my original clockwork which must be at least 13 years old if not more. it still has the original seat pin , seat clamp, and bear trap pedals.

my youngest son is stillrunning an old shimano deore dx shortcage rear mech fitted with tacx(?) ally jockey wheels.

numerous other bits knocking about that are well over 5 years old and still in perfect working order
:idea:could be a possible gold mine for the retro crowd. i'll get back to you ๐Ÿ˜‰

My only MTB( Klein) is coming up for ten years for the frame, mostly M960 for the groupset which is getting a bit ancient( but looks nice)
I can see the point of having bang-up-to-date road stuff, but a mountainbike? nahh, just ride the thing!

Well mine is only three years old right now, but almost as built, and everything almost perfect, just a couple of scratches and new disc pads.
i know it's blasphemy to some, but if you keep your bike in a decent (clean) state it will last a lot longer than otherwise. With a bit of luck mine will fly past 5 years old easily.

my MTB is new but my road bike is over 20 years old. However, the only original parts are the frame and forks and crankset, though not the big rings. So is it the same bike?

Cotic Soul (Mk 1) Original Hope Minis (2001) XT cranks (2000) F519 on XT front hub (2001).
All on my main bike.
Mind you I was out on my lad's bike on Friday with Cantis and Tioga Psycho 2s. That was an eye opener!

My bike is 5-6 years old with no plans to retire it yet. I've replaced every component except the frame and swingarm though. Mostly twice. Up to 5 times... apart from that it's as I bought it.

I try not to buy new stuff until it wears out (too skint) and it's amazing how much you can get kit to limp along. Having said that it helps to have a nice Ti frame from before the kids came along ('97 Hei Hei, now with Middleburn cranks and Rebas).

I think most kit will last a long time if cared for and non abused, its more likely that fashion and trends dictate changing stuff.

You're either really lucky or you never ride it through winter or something!? ๐Ÿ™‚ Seriously though, I'm not sure I could make a drivetrain last for 3 years without replacing something, especially if it's my main bike. Some of the places in the Peak District I ride you can literally hear parts being ground away as you ride ๐Ÿ™‚

I use the A2Z adaptor as below.

It's not very pretty but get the job done really well and was a cinch to fit.

I'm still using/abusing my trusty Marin Mount Vision QUAD II from 2004.
Had it six years next week and still going strong.
Ok, i've changed the forks/brakes/seatpost/saddle/stem/headset and all the drive train except the crank arms but apart from the forks all the rest are just through either wear & tear or to get a slightly better fit.

4" travel is now seen as short travel but TBH for the riding i do i can't see i need owt newer/more travel etc.

Doesn't stop me lusting after a new bike but this one is fine.

Yeh I've got a few older bikes. Original orange p7 built in '96 still gets plenty of use, still using my first mtb - a marin muirwoods bought in '92, although I've strpped it down to a singlespeed, and powder coated the frame, fitted flat pedals and wide bars and have great fun on the most local rooty singletrack. 4 year old scott raodbike, although the only original things are the frame and shifters, kona jake the snake - 3 years old and ridden around 20k miles, only the frame, cranks, front mech and shiters left of the original spec.

That bike's just past it's 6th birthday. Plenty of kit has been replaced on it, but some parts are antique! The Hope/Mavic wheels are about the same age as the frame. I'm often tempted to buy something more "up to date", but really, not much has changed in the world of quality XC hardtails.

Fair play to the guy who added the tags! ๐Ÿ˜†
