I built my 5TDisc up a few weeks back and have taken it out for a few spins. The idea was to build it up for general use, a bit of road, off road, rubbish roads etc and therefore I fitted 40c tyres (Planet X Gravel Road in 700x40c flavour).
Nothing is rubbing, the wheels spin freely, and the BB is as sweet as a nut but the darned bike is such hard work to ride. I have a suspicion that it is the tyres causing the problem and have therefore ordered some WTB Nanos - also in 40c.
This isn't my first 'cross' bike and I wasn't expecting it to feel like my Super Six but my knackered old Swift feels more sprightly and that surprises me.
I suppose my question is this - has anyone else used the Planet X Gravel/Road tyre and did it make their bike feel as if it was rolling on flypaper?
Or do I need to look elsewhere?
what wheels?
I had heavy mtb rims and heavy tyres on my vaya. felt like riding through treacle. a swap to lighter tyres and rims and it's almost as quick as my road bike.
I wonder if your wheels are flexing & rubbing the brakes (edit, duh; "disc") when riding but not when you get off & check ?
? still could be rubbing on stays - maybe ??
Hunt 4 Season Disc, nice and light.
The discs are fine, no rubbing at all.
No rubbing on the stays either. The paint is still there! There is also masses of clearance so they would have to be uber bendy!
Tyres can make a heck of a difference, or it could just be you (had a cold recently?).
Fit as a flea atm.
Maybe I should stick some road tyres on and take it for a whirl.
Cheap knobbly tyres are draggy shocker ๐
They aren't that knobbly and respectably (though not excessively) light. I am quite prepared to be proved an eejit for expecting them to roll well though. ๐ณ
Probably. Try some road tyres to confirm then get some Barlow Passes on there.
Tyres make a huge difference, far more than the weight of the wheels.
Have a look here.. the best they tested for touring is a Marathon (standard) which uses 20-30 watts depending on psi, the worst a vittoria randonneur (not "hyper" version) which uses 30-50 watts. A GP 4000s is about 11-13 watts.
