I'm in Newcastle today, where do I ride? Both seem to be about the same distance, I've ridden Hamsterly before, but not Kielder.

Save yourself a drive and go to chopwell? Though need local knowledge as except dh trail no waymarking but plenty tyre tracks to follow.
Reckon Kielder will be grimmer than Hamsterley today.
Hamsterly is probably more sheltered. Both are different- I like Kielder because it feels a bit more bleak and out there but Hamsterly has more to offer the Enduro specific rider.
I figured Hamsterly would be a bit more sheltered. Although a short drive sounds nice, when it's weather like this I just want to be told where to ride and not have to think too much about it.

If i didn't still have the boy to look after today i could have given you a guided tour around Chopwell.

Hamsterley is a shorter drive than Kielder, and will be less exposed on a day like today. Chopwell is easy enough to navigate without a guide, but was knee-deep in slop the last time I was there.
Ended up at Hamsterly, picking bits here and there, including some of the fairly lethal off paste stuff. It was very windy on the top but not too wet and the sun even popped out for a bit.
