All very noble of you.

As you have pointed out, you're a racing snake, capable of leading the rest of us in any given 12 or maybe 24hr race.
So you have the perspective from the high-moral ground, as t'wer.

The rest of us are perhaps going to struggle, and that, my friend, is why there is, as you put it, so much soul searching going on.
We lesser mortals are going to find this very hard graft and I for one am thinking, maybe, just maybe I'm a liitle out of depth on this one; but I am prepared to give it my best shot.
Ergo; any little bit of help is greatly received, and if that means a simple reference point & time-check, I'm all in favour of this - and that's why I mention it here.

But I don't understand all the soul searching that's going on about this event. Will there be too many hills?, will I have to carry too much stuff?, which bike? Which tyres?

Yup.

Just give it a go - only one person gets to win.

Even if you miss the first cut off, you've still got to ride back to the finish line. So the minimum distance you're going to ride is 55 miles/7.5 hours plus whatever it takes to ride back to the finish. That's a decent ride in itself.

There are 4x categories, so presumably 4x winners.
Unless Jojo has a category tucked up his sleeve ๐Ÿ˜‰

This simple reference point (two would be even better)would be a help in preventing a potentially pointless 7.5hr ride, although I am hoping to complete the full distance.
I'm doing it to complete, not compete (for honours) - so a little assistance would be most welcome.

Ti29er - fit a cycle computer and do not use the auto stop / start. When the race starts set it going. It will then record the elapsed time including stops and the distance covered. To get to the cut offs you need to average ...

cut off 1 55 miles / 7.5 hours - 7.3 mph
cut off 2 65 miles / 10 hours - 6.5 mph
end of race 100 miles / 13.5 hours - 7.4 mph (assuming there is a cut off or you can still keep going till midnight once you get past cut off 2 ??)

Hour upon hour if you're above these then you should make it assuming the course isn't one massive up followed by one descent. You could make it more accurate by getting a profile of the route and working out average speed over terrain of course.

A veteran 'girl' these days too, hence the smaller category fields. ๐Ÿ™‚

Will look forward to not seeing Raddogair for dust (prays for dust rather than mud).

unfortunately 'Northumberland is a massive area, and kielder has its very own micro climate due to the massive lake in the middle of it, the best town to search on for weather forecasts would be Hexham, or bellingham if you can find a weather site that has that...

Looking to camp Thursday night to Sunday night inc'. Depart Monday morning - if my legs still function properly!
I've emailed the site with my booking, so fingers X-ed.

As to the after-race party / evening event: I will have trouble standing up, let alone downing a few beers me thinks.

I thought my comments were self deprecating, no more than that. A touch of humour, poking fun at me.
Anyhow, it's pouring with rain, yet the Met Office site says it's not.
Ho-hum!
See you on the start line I suppose.

I wouldn't worry too much about forecasts. I,m hoping for no rain as it will make it much easier kit wise, cycling shorts, cycling top and gilet. any rain complicates that, and i really don't want to carry a rucksack

Peopele that are worried they might miss the cut off due to wrong pace etc why not just fit a computer. That will give you a rough idea of hoe far you have gone?

Bag drops with your own food and/or a large drinks bottle in will be taken to Feed Stations 1, 2 and 4. Bags must be no bigger than a large sandwich/freezer bag, securely fastened with your rider number on and placed in the correct container at the rider briefing.

Don't see why not, as it'll be smaller than a large drinks bottle.

I've done 80miles (130k) off road plus 25miles (40k) on road last night.
Have one more ride tomorrow along with a very gentle spin on Tuesday evening next week. Then I've run out of time!
Away this weekend in Cornwall jet skiing so have to get the bike together next week (Luckily I'm off all week! )

So does this mean you can have a bag for each station or if you have one they will take it onwards to each one? And just how big is a 'large sandwich/freezer bag'?

MrS.
Don't try & clarify! 3x drops.

Buy the large -est freezer or sandwhich bag you can possibly buy. Tesco? Sainsbury? Waitrose? Asda? (some homework for you!)

Seriously, do you really think they'll wait for you to arrive at Feed Station 1 and only then move it to Feed Station 2 for you? Who is monitoring race numbers? How much transport do they have between stations?

Don't take it as read, but it's just my understanding of the rules as I see it.
Bizarrely, my local Spar sells sanwich bags made for Shrek! HUGE! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Thanks for the map.
I don't suppose it's going to make a lot of sense until I get up there - and even then it might just be a little daunting! Think I'll arrive on Thursday and get my bearings.
Are you riding fully rigid & 29?
Have you ordered the same weather - hope not?
Where abouts on the trail are these taken as the trail looks all weather at this point?
Thanks Mike.

They're paul4stones photos, not mine.

The map doesn't make any sense to me, as I don't know the area. However, it's nice to see that we're never that far from the start, so if anything does go wrong, it's not going to be a huge distance to get back.

This is an A4 version of the map that I've uploaded for people..
I agree about the possible walk "home" - good to know if the Racing Ralfs shred themselves!
That's it now for me.
Two more short 2hr rides and I'll see y'all up there.
