How's the training been going this year Mike?
I'm seriously considering ditching the camelbak and attaching things to the bike. Although that means the space blanket, gilet, pump, inner tube, allen keys and gels.

Same mileage as last year, so far but less in recent months and more earlier in the year. Managed 65 miles in 8 hours at Hit The North in July and had a ride out to Swaledale from home that also came in at the same.
All blogged at: http://mactually.co.uk/
But I'm double hard
He's so double hard that he may be sleeping rough the night before [& the night after] ๐
Trickydisco just buy a saddle bag or a bottle cage (and put everything in a bottle). I ditched everything except a light weight racing pack with 1L of water for other races (can't get enough liquid on the bike) and it made one heck of a difference. If you are not throwing the bike around (jumps, drops etc.) then you don't notice the bike weighing more.
Think i'm going to go with two 750ml bottles attached the bike. Last time i had a saddle bag it came off half way round one of the SITS laps.. I need something that clamps to the seat rather than a strap.
Changing the topic slightly but does everyone chow down energy gels throughout this ride? I heard rob lee did 46 energy gels at mountain mayhem!
I suppose if you keep taking them every 30 mins or so you wouldn't bonk? I always thought of energy gels as a 'in case of emergency break glass" moment to get you home.
After trying a few different options this week, I'll be putting as much weight as possible on the bike. I've no bottle cage so I can't decide between chucking a bottle in the back pocket or carrying a very light pack. If I have too much crap in my jersey pockets I find it gets disorganised and I worry about stuff falling out.
I hate to think what 46 energy gells would do to your guts! ๐ฏ
He also consumed
18L weak isotonic solution (Gatoraide mixed at half strength would do it)
1L Flat Coke
2L Flat Sprite
6 x Torq Bars
1 small loaf of Marmite sandwiches
this was a 24 hour solo
I've no bottle cage
4.99 from your LBS, more than worth it...

I've no mounts and no obvious place to bodge it where the bottle won't fall out or get covered in shite. I'll probably have a look at the saddle-mounted holders but I want to use a saddle bag and the idea of attaching everything with a plastic mount and having it fall off after 15 miles is giving me the fear.

I'm going with JonB so we need to sort out food drops, but to date on our training rides it's been mostly Snickers bars for me & pork pies for JonB. Going to try out Ginsters tonight, at least they come in their own wrapping. Energy gels just don't feel right all the time...
Jelly Babies - Heads first for extra umph!

On the bars?

I'm also a pork pie man. I crave them when i start flagging.
Thats a good shout uplink, thanks.
I'm going to use one of those top tube 'Tri' bags for instant access to food
& a small hydration pack for water etc.
I seem to neglect eating if it's out of sight
The wee tri bags are very handy, a couple of mates have them on their road bikes.
Shandy - you could try this to fit a bottle cage http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/product.asp?pf_id=13892 I put one on this weekend and whilst it looks horrible it worked well. That coupled with a large ortlieb saddle bag to carry waterproof and tools with a couple of sarnies and some gels in back pockets. Ready to go...

Me too, if it's in my bag when I set off, it'll be there when I finish.
Pockets for me. Might use the tribag if it's wet.
I don't fancy carrying a camelbak 4 100miles, so going for 1L bottle on bike and carry a spare 500ml in back pocket. With food drops, we only have to carry enough food for each leg (25miles), then can pick up supplies. Tube, multitool and spares carried under seat. Gillet/waterproof/pump/mp3 in jersey pocket. How hard can it be? ๐

I'd not be wanting to try anything new on the day...
Can anyone recommend a tri bag? I'm after one to carry bars and gels on this ride but am worried that they don't hold that much. I can't find any locally to look at either.
Try one of these, they hold a fair bit in them, more than the tribags.

Pretty much my plan. Though, I'm carrying two 700ml bottles on the bike and only filling one. Last year, there was quite a big gap between the final refill and the finish, and I was going slower then. So, the extra bottle will be filled for the last bit only.

isn't the general rule 750ml per hour? 1st station is 25 miles?
EDIT:.. nope it's 15
isn't the general rule 750ml per hour?
If I drink 750ml an hour, I have to keep stopping to pee ๐
If you don't stop for a pee regularly, you are dehydrated.
So those that have done the race before would recommend no bag on the back, and put it on the bike. Seems a good idea - nice to avoid the usual neck and back pain...
For the food stations - do I need cash for them? ANd do people drop their own food because the event supply is limited, or because they want specific items they are used to?
Thanks,
Ade

No money needed
own food so you know what you're getting & you minimize the risk of them running out
Rider Bag DropsBag drops with your own food in will be taken to Feed Stations 1, 2 and 4. Bags must be no bigger than a large sandwich/freezer bag, securely fastened with your rider number clearly written on and placed in the correct container at the rider briefing. Bags will be returned to HQ at the end of the day.
No liquids please. If every rider put a 500ml bottle of liquid in their drop bags, that's 900kg of liquid we're transporting, on top of the 1000+litres of water and energy drink we're already providing!
