[#8460727]

Little lad has a spesh hardrock 24 it currently has grip shift but he really struggles to change gear. It has sram shifters and x3 mechs, 7 speed but for some reason it has an 8 speed cassette on it.

He can operate shimano shifters OK so I'm looking at moving to those. Would a 10 speed cassette fit the hub if it already has an 8 speed on. I already have a 10 speed cassette chain and ring so I could hopefully get away with going 1x10 just getting a shifter and mech

Or is there a cheap place to get older shimano gear thanks

10sp cassette should fit. They are usually 8/9/10sp freehubs.

You'll need some chain retention too. Superstar top guide would be fine. N/W chainring too if you are at the point of needing to change that too.

Cheap 10sp? - classifieds here is good, or CRC/Merlin/Bike Discount/Bike 24 etc.

8 spd rapidfire shifter? Old mech might be able to manage it?

Perhaps I'll take a look at the cables see how they look but tbh I think they were jagwire and looked in good order. Then possibly try an older shifter good idea

Change cable to a ptfe coated one as well when you swap shifters.

Change cable to a ptfe coated one as well when you swap shifters.

Also consider just doing a straight cable run as well the the teflon coated and leave a nice gentle bend

Sometimes it feels ok when you take the load off and the cable moves freely but it sticks when its under load ... I was pulling my hair out with this (even switched the mech and shifter from my bike to the kids) and then changed to a new teflon coated cable in a last desperate try.... and suddenly it all worked!

Used 1x10 can be pretty cheap on ebay where people are selling due to upgrade to 1x11 ... there seems to be a lot of over demand created... (front shifters seem to have almost no value)
