I know it's late, work 12 to 12 so I'm not long in

Not the longest commute ever, little over 3 miles each way but still a challenge for a fatty like me who is a little too used to smoking and driving. So the fags are given up and the healthy life has begun.

One thing I have learned.....singlespeeds not for me just yet, switching to the Kona tomorrow and d-locks weigh a ton

Other than that it's all good fun

can you not leave the d-lock at work?
i used to struggle with 12hr days and a 6 mile (each way) commute. not because the commute was hard, but because i was always knackered from the early starts and long hard days. So hats off to you.

Get some mud guards. They make a huge difference after a downpour.

I hardly get wet these days with mine. It does make the bike look like an old man's bike though but who cares if you're dry.

The first time I rode to work about three years ago, I thought I was going to die. It is 3.75 miles and my heart was bursting out of my chest, I felt sick and I had stars in my eyes. 15KG heavier back then, and a big fan of fags, booze and curry.

3 years on, I still eat too much curry and drink far too much (and to be fair I am more than a little on the portly side) , but I am fitter and healthier than I have been in years.

Good luck to you, Sir and remember it will get easier and more enjoyable.

Commuting is good and def gets you stronger I have kept with my SS set up, get some puncture proof tyres or that gunk. I have chose to use a courier bag after a short time with panniers. If you can take a change of clothing if not DO NOT cycle in jeans!!

Good on you mate. It's the best start to the day and clears the head at the end as well. I work 12 hr shifts, so it's a 5 am start for me and a home return at 8pm.

All year round.... Fantastic!

I still want to start bike commuting, still need to do a test run to see how long it'll take me to get there. And then I need a road bike!

Great post Boba Fatt

Well done for starting, you picked a good time to start, with the schools off and the roads a bit quieter

ss wise, give it a couple of weeks if you can, wont take long for your body to get used to it.

& leave your D-lock where you park your bike, like everyone else does ๐Ÿ˜‰

I don't take a change of clothing for short commutes - saves time. If it's hot I take a change of shirt though, since that's easy.

+1 for mudguards
+1 for leaving your lock at work

Well done for getting started.

I have also just started commuting some of the way to work & back. I only do it on Mon & Fri at the moment. I have a 60 mile each way total commute, so I have started parking the car up 12.5 miles from work & riding in. I needed to start getting more miles in my legs and this was a good way of doing it. Once i've done it for a while I might extend the distance but currently I'm leaving the house at 6:30 and not getting to work until 8:30, which gives me enough time to shower and get to my desk for 8:45. Extending the distance might mean time starts to get a bit tight.

Good luck on the new healthy lifestyle!

Keep it up Boba, it gets much easier and becomes second nature after a while...you'll be glad you made the effort ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks for all the support

D-locks been left at work, and I'm on gears today as my left crank on my ss keeps working loose for some reason

Cooling down was my main concern but I seemed to get to a normal temp pretty quickly yesterday.....which was nice

Glad you're enjoying it.
I finished work at 1:00am this morning and cycled 12km home. I think I saw two cars on the road, it's a great time to ride.

Yes, although I drove in for the week following riding SiTS solo. ๐Ÿ˜ณ
