if you're buying a bike with the stem you want, if it's got a 27.2mm seatpost I might be interested

Probably because anyone buying a stem goes mail order and carrying range of models/sizes causes problems?
If we all used our local bike shop, things may be different, sadly.
You'd think Evans might be able to get one quick though, with their stores/web shop.

Bike shop 1, didnt sell crank extractor tools, and had to look in a catalogue to find what they where, then said NO, we dont have any,

BS2 , didnt sell bar ends,no call for them, and had run out of replacement spokes,

BS3, didnt sell and couldnt get me a replacement left hand crank, shimano.

Non where Evans or Halfords, but large shops in a major town.

I've changed my opinion of them for bits and bobs e.g. at the last minute 7pom at night.

Rate them better than Halfrauds as their mail order service has been very good to me and their shop in Bristol -the staff might not know everything they are enthusiastic and try to find out what they don't know about.

They never pick up the bloody phone though.

I still have my traditional fave LBS's and and choose to support them.

Bristol Evans don't have cycle parking either! more of car driver visits shop and buys £3000 bike etc.

Went in and asked for a cable guide for the underside of the bb. Was told to try one of the large bike shop chains. And I'm not even kidding.

I rang Halfrauds and asked about the price of an outer ferrels and spacers for disc brakes etc and was told we only sell cheap tires.

Went in and actually found on the shelf and told the manger who popped up saying can I help? I said yeah, employ people who want to work for you instead of spotty teenagers who are lazy or thick.

I've never yet been into a bike shop (any shop, not just Evans) and been told to leave my bike outside! I've always just walked in with it and parked it somewhere convenient and out the way.

uh huh, hear that.

finally got the knackered freewheel off the wheel today, so now just pop the new one on, spin it up and ready for work tomorrow.

shame the new one is 1/8 not 3/32 - no point even going to halfords to see if they have one in.

I had the exact same experience asking for a stem at an Evans in London. Asked next if they knew anywhere that did sell them so the guy recommended another Evans a bus ride away. 😕

As it happens there was another larger MTB shop (with stems!) 100 yards further down the street.

I wonder if this had been a non-chain LBS, if there'd have been such an uproar?

And I'd like to know what you said to him next?

Me? I'd have said "Sorry mate, but I think you're wrong there. I think you should check again"

Maybe he was new to the job or got the wrong end of the stick?

But no, it's a STWer up in arms, so it MUST be the shop. I wouldn't be surprised if you went in there looking for something to kick up a fuss about.....

Second PP. Any other shop that you walked into you'd probably have questioned an answer like that- whether to ask if they were joking with you, had they sold out, could they get some in, why they didn't have any etc.

pp 8)

what i said was 'you sell stems mate, you have them on your website, but i need one today'
he said ' errr, i will ask'
i said ' do, please'
so he did, and they did not have any in stock.
in a national cycle chain store, they did not have 1 stem in stock.
i did buy some bar tape, lightweight overshoes, lightweight gloves, and a new water bottle.
i bought these just to show no hard feeling like, cos they did not have a stem.
when i got home i found a shorter stem, which i put on my stiffee, from which i robbed the thomson 70mm non o/s stem for my tourer.
so in a round about way i got sorted
saved me 25/50 quid which i wanted to spend in evans on a stem.....bastids........... 😉

More to the point, what are you doing shopping in Evans?*

*I'm probably a bike shop snob

**I'm not bitter after being rejected by Evans/Halfrauds because I was too knowledgeable about bikes 😉

no, just find that they are a general purpose bike store and therefore unlikely to stock the parts I need. Not a good example of an LBS on either service or techical know how, or parts stocked.

cheers

Bristol Evans don't have cycle parking either!

They let you bring bikes into the shop if you want.

So, the OP didn't tell the whole story? I thought as much.
Why?
To get a rection. = Troll.
Why?
Beacuse it's Evans.

I maintain that if the little LBS didn't have a stem, you'd never have posted this.......

😉

Hmmmm, very good. So, a shop that ignores customers, that is rude to customers, that fails in their mechanical duties, that overcharges people, etc. etc. etc. is talking shite?

Oh do grow up, please.

I've seen and heard far worse in several other independent bike shops including some that are constantly bigged up on here but becasue it's Evans it seems fashionable to slag them off, the same people trotting out the same stories every time.

CF, Im sure i have read on here that you have NEVER even been in Evans, so stop talking SHITE, and commenting on something you dont know about, your right, you should grow up, your a TROLL

First of all, shop that ignores people, not in MY experience
rude to customers, again, not in MY experience
fails in there mechanical duties, not in MY experience
and over charges, again, not in MY experience

Like most people on here, i comment on something i have experience of, unlike you, get a life, or here is a thought, maybe go in a branch of Evans and get YOUR experience, loser.
