I will be attempting it at the end of August so this means new bike time!! We will be doing it supported and aim to complete it in 10 days. So here's the question. Is it possible using a double chainset? Im very tempted by the Uncle John but it only has a double but will I miss another ring and the ratios that it gives? Anyone on here done it with a double? I don't really want a 'proper' road bike or a tourer as I probably won't use them after the trip, hence a Cyclo X.

Yes I did it with a double, I had 52/39 perfectly feasible

I don't think so. It seems to just be a route depending on cheap accommodation. Or is that just our trip!!
