[#9913526]

Hello Jeffsy owners and/or LBS people.  I've had my Jeffsy about a year, and I'm thinking the bearings will need some attention at some point in the very near future.

Has anyone on here changed their bearings?  If so :

- Was it relatively straightforward or would you pay someone else to do it next time?

- What tools were needed?

- Any bearing replacement recommendations (I know that YT sell replacement kits)?

I like fettling, but don't want to get it apart and discover that I need a unicorn horn bearing fettler that I don't have.

On a similar, related, topic: any bottom bearing recommendtions (for the same reason)?  Mine has the SRAM Eagle cranks (and I assume BB) - should I replace like for like or go with something like HOPE (and assume I'll have to buy the unicorn horn fitting tool).

There's a massive Jeffsy thread on Pinkbike if you're not already aware, and quite a few folk have posted recently about bearing changes as bikes are being delivered with no grease in them.

Thanks Yetiman.  I'll be honest and say

- I don't read Pinkbike really, but sometimes does come up in searches for stuff

- I'd avoided the 400+ page Jeffsy thread because there is so much discussion that it's hard to get the real value out of it (even finding all the responses to a given subject in there means reading through many pages of replies)

I'm hoping mine wasn't delivered with no grease as I expect it's toast by now 😐

Yeah there’s a lot of repeated waffle in that thread but I think the most recent bearing replacement discussions should be in the last 10-15 pages, if you filter back the way. It was relatively recent anyway.

OK - I waded through - and there was something around page 435 🙂

Seems pretty straightforward and not alarming - suggestion to do one at a time which seems intelligent.  References "pretty easy with the correct tools" which kinda leaves me begging what they are.  I assume some sort of bearing puller and / or press tool - but any further advice?

There are a few blind bearings which i used a slide hammer to remove.  It was an easy job, but then i have the tools at my disposal from previous bikes.  The hardest to remove were the bearings on the rear seat stays

Had a look at mine after 9 months took off bearing cap and flipped bearing seal off and they looked a bit dry and a few signs of corrosion. So I pumped some more grease in which will see me for a couple of months , also took note of bearing numbers.  6803 x4  6900 x2 6801 x4 all Max type. Kinetic on ebay seem to be the best at moment .

They look ok to pop out, I usually use bolt/washers and a socket to remove and bolt washer to pop back in, take my time and all is good . Chain stay ones close to wheel axle are 2 bearings each side so may take a bit more thought.

This exploded drawing is useful reference for anyone searching this in the future.

Seen Kinetic do a kit - looks reasonable.  Am just looking for tool options at the moment.  Feeling like, armed with the diagram and a bit of time on my hands it's perfectly feasible if I get the tools.  Beers in the fridge for either getting over the stuff I find I can't do because I'm missing a hand turned unicorn horn bearing fettler or for swigging with a smug satisfied grin on my face.

Changed all mine in the carbon jeffsy.... All 11 of them. I remember them all....

I had some bearing tools but still had to bodge a few things to get them all out and new ones in....

Since bought a bearing install kit off eBay specifically for the jeffsy. Not used it yet.

I got a kit of replacement bearings off eBay too. Specifically for the jeffsy.

It's doable at home. Need patience mainly and enough bits of "junk" in your tool box to bodge the odd tool together as needed...

The bearings in mine were proper bad yet the only symptom was a ticking noise from the bearing in one chain stay. Took me ages to find the origin of the bloody noise! Looked at that then realised they all needed doing. Lol 😆
