I've just gone to take my Truvativ Stylo crankset off and the 8mm bolt has cracked and now isn't pushing against the larger self-extracting piece, it just screws out through the middle.

Has anyone got any ideas how to get the left hand crank arm off without the use of this 8mm bolt?

Also - Assuming I can get the arm off, anyone know where I can get the 8mm bolt from? EDIT: I've seen Wiggle sell them so can't be that hard to get hold of.

Could you take out the self extracting type bolt (it's like 12mm though so finding a hex key won't be as easy), remove the 8mm bolt and then use a conventional crank extractor, possibly using a couple of 1p coins to fill the diameter of the hole? When/if putting the self extracting bolt back, give it a good layer of loctite, otherwise you'll find it comes off instead of self-extracting.

hmm, not sure if a normal extractor tool would fit but worth a go though I guess. I though it was bigger than 12mm too, maybe 15mm or so. will measure it and see what it is.

my only thought was pour boiling water over the crank and see if hitting it was a hammer would loosen it any. (obviously I would take out the 8mm bolt first!)

just for completeness I thought I'd tell you what i've managed to do:

Unscrewing the 8mm bolt for a bit dislodged the outer 16mm bolt so was able to unscrew that and remove both bolts. The crank arm was well and truly stuck on so I managed to get my BB tool over the crank arm and onto the BB i kept undoing that until it forced the crank arm off! Happy Days!

Now all I need is to work out which size I need to replace the broken bolt with and I've got a working bike again.

Anyone know which of these two I need for my Stylo 3.3 chainset?

swoosh I have 3x sets of those cranks that came on frames, I managed to lose or give away 2x sets of the small aluminium spacers they use to shim out the non drive side bb cups.

Do you want one of the cranks, I don't have any use for 2x sets of them, they are just sitting there โ“

You can keep the rest of the crank as spares.

Kaesae - not sure I really need the cranks, just the bolts. But thanks for the offer.

Cool.

Have you inspected the threads on the cranks you have โ“

Why was the bolt stuck in the first place ๐Ÿ’ก

Too be honest I'm just trying to get rid of what I consider to be stuff I don't need. But don't really want to throw away ๐Ÿ˜€

I can understand you not wanting to through the cranks away. I have a box of stuff similar that I keep meaning to put on the Classified section but never get round to it.

As for why the bolt got stuck - yeah, I think i know why. I was putting the BB and cranks together and really put some welly into tightening the cranks up to remove any play, started tidying up and found the little spacer that you mentioned before on the floor that I had forgotten to put on. So I guess I had probably overtightened the bolt in the first place and the pressure that I was applying to the self-extracting bolts to remove the non-drive crank arm was probably more than they were designed to take and so the flange on the 8mm bolt cracked and then just started coming out through the middle of the 16mm bolt!

Hahaha! been there! have you rotated the bearings manually to see if you've ****ed them and do you want one of the bolts from the cranks I have โ“

Gotta go work to do, good luck with the bike โ—

I've checked the bearings and they look and feel ok. One was a touch gritty and a degrease and some fresh grease seems to have sorted that out mostly.

I have emailed you re the bolts.
