After an epidemic of punctures, decided to take the plunge and go ghetto tubeless. Given the various experiences I've read about, I reckoned the chance of it working was about nil but fancied a quick bit of shed time so had a go yesterday.
Ignoring a load of pointless faffing, took about an hour to do one tire, including drilling out the rim (WTB speedisc am) to take a schrader valve. Went up first time with a floor pump but tyre (bonty mud x) had one hole too big to seal. Fixed that and all looked good. Even then I was bit sceptical so left it overnight.
Still ok this morning and still ok now, after 18 off road miles today.
A good start to 2014, especially, given my previous record on mechanical stuff - I guess some sort of divine intervention was involved - so am now praying for the rain to stop, although that's probably a bit ambitious.
I have been out on a few rides where I didn't have a puncture, I think you just got lucky, now if it doesn't rain for the rest of the year then I'll promote you to God & the ability to perform miracles ๐
I felt exactly the same about 8 months ago. Constant Hawthorne punctures. Got fed up with going to the shed to get the bike out for a quick blast only to find the tyres were flat. 7 punctures one week.
Took the plunge, bought Chunky monkey & Smorgasbord tyres, some stand fluid, bmx tubes...and haven't had a puncture since. ****ing brilliant. Best upgrade to date..
