Try pulling the lowers down and tightening the nut

If he pulls the lowers down the threaded rod will likely disappear up into the lowers.

Are you using new crush washers? If not, i've found this can cause the rod to spin - i know this sounds odd, but it tends to be that the because the crush washers 'grip' onto the threads ever so slightly, this causes enough friction to prevent them pushing up into place whilst your trying to tighten them.

A couple of methods:

1) If they're floats, thread the nuts on a bit then partially inflate the air side, this pushes the air side rod down, tus enabling you to get that side threaded on ok. leave it, go have a cuppa, come back and very slowly start to thread the damping side on. This has worked for me a load of times in the past.

or

2) Again, get the nuts slightly on then compress the forks and fasten a belt to the crown and the brace on the lowers to hold them very firmly compressed - you should be able to thread them on. I think when under the compression the rods re pushed into position.

Many thanks - it appears the damper thread was ever so slightly rough and binding on the foot nut ( not visible to the eye ) - I chased it with a steel bolt and reformed the threads = job done - went on easily them - used a sim method to mildreds suggestion - cheers

I ad this problem and phone mojo. They said the thread will be slightly damaged, you will need an M8 tap and die nut fine thread. If you can get one just run them down the but and the threaded part of the shaft. They told me you should be able to turn the nut by hand with no resistance. HTH
