I've got a 3 ring crankset which i've stripped to just the middle ring for singlespeed. i thought if i fit it the wrong way round then i can get life out of both sides of the ring i.e. i can turn it round for use with gears or possibly prolong the life of it in ss. i can't see anything wrong with it, except that i may not get that much extra life out of it. thoughts?

You'll have to fit it to the other side of the spider due to the counter bores for the bolt heads which will only work with 5 bolt chainsets. 4 bolt chainsets have different height shoulders supporting the middle and outer rings. The only way round this is to buy a Surley ring which has no counter bores on the bolt holes.

If it has teeth relieved for gear changing, then turning it around is going to almost certainly lead to TTTI* problems.

A Surly or On-One ring is well worth the money, and they are reversible.
