Or can I put a road one on my mountain bike (68mm shell)?

the cups are 1mm wider so yes on a 68 mm shell with one spacer drive side.

ie. 1 spacer each side (lose 1 spacer to account for the extra 2mm)?
That would change chain line by 1mm, but I guess that's not enough to worry about?
