I know postage was free but surely a small envelope would have been better, something like you get cds in from amazon?
Thats made my day, hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
*s****s*
Methinks there may be a butt kicking session in the morning at CRC... 🙂
Oh no, I ordered some spokes that are now apparently in the post. I wonder if the parcel will be delivered by Chinook?
I'm with you there and was about to post an identical thread

shimano brake olive. Receipt included to prove I hadnt ordered a chainset at the same time!
I always thought £2.99 was a lot of money for a few grammes of brass but now I dont feel so bad...
All packed by a machine.

the Acme Profit Destroyer 3000?
I find it ironic that recently the only parcels I haven't been able to collect from the post office on the bike are CRC ones because they're too big...
The boxes are bit of a pain now, before it was a jiffy bag that the postie could put through the door. Now its the dreaded red card "sorry we missed you....."
The extra boxes must be costing them more.

Stop it, you'll give me a hernia. 😀
Lol I thought it was just me! I had the small end cap for the XTR M970 chainset today and that came in a bloody big box too - maybe it's old stock boxes and they need shift them. It made us laugh in the office.
Have had many a box through like that!!!! was equally surprised!
Tip the waitress, try the steak, I'm here til thursday 🙂
I had an XT disc brake lever from them maybe 6 weeks ago in the same size box which I thought was over packed deliberately on the grounds it was a vaguely fragile vaguely valuable component. I assume this is in fact the smallest package the box bot can handle, in which case how long before CRC have a minimum order size/value?
I have had the same experience twice now for very small parts. Both times I received the 'Sorry you were out' cards. Apart from the inconvenience of that, what a waste of packaging! It's hardly a "green" approach by CRC. I wonder if they have any environmentally friendly awards/accreditation etc.? If so, they shouldn't...
ATB, Dom.
How very odd - when I left my last employers three weeks ago, my boss bought me a park tool mug from CRC. It arrived on my last day with a broken handle, which caused him some embarrassment as I opened the present in front of everyone and at least one of the directors called him a cheapskate 🙂
CRC duly sorted a replacement, but that arrived with a chip in the rim. Thankfully the replacement for *that* is fine: they didn't ask us to sent the mugs back, just to send photos which the chap at CRC did say he was going to show the packaging department. from one extreme to the other, it seems...
The boxes will cost [s]considerably[/s] somewhat less than jiffy bags, especially with the economies of scale that CRC work at and the ability to automate packaging. As to whether a jiffy bag would be more environmentally friendly I have no idea but I'd have my doubts. They're more complicated objects with multiple extra materials and processes required for assembly. They're also harder to recycle than cardboard.
edit: mental arithmetic fail, for us it would work out fractionally more expensive to use boxes than jiffy bags but then we don't automate packaging.
Those boxes are recyclable, and already recycled. Normal jiffy bags go straight to landfill (so do most recyclable ones) and the more environmentally friendly ones are relatively expensive.
There's also benefits of handling- boxes stack, jiffy bags don't...
CRC aren't morons you know... Chances are someone in the company's thought about this before.
I received my powerlinks today
Came in a cardboard box big enough for a haynes car manual
Think someone needs to reprogram the packing computer
Crack on crc and get it sorted out.
Fair comment. It's just a shame they don't fit through a letter box!
It's just a shame they don't fit through a letter box!
this would be my major problem as it will either mean a trip to the sorting office or my partner being knocked up when she's on nights!
Lol
For those in IT, the Reg ran an article a while back about HP's excessive packaging. I think the computer mouse shipped on a pallet was possibly the best (or worst, if you get my drift)
Oh. They fit through my letter box
me too, token dust-caps, the cats are fighting over the box as i type 🙄
i remember when it was postage, before this new collectage stuff they do now 😆
I would imagine the boxes are sized so that multiples of them fit tidily on a pallet, making them easy to shift by normal transport.
Jiffy bags would need to be contained in bulk within some other bag or box, which would then need to be returned to CRC for reuse.
Makes me wonder what size box my 710mm bars will be in...
my partner being knocked up when she's on nights!
😯
Seems a bit extreme! Can't she just put some earplugs in?
So on this thread we've established that it's
- cheaper materials wise for them (thus probably cheaper for you)
- more environmentally (sp?) friendly than jiffy bags
- cheaper for them to handle (thus probably cheaper for you)
but you lot are still complaining! I love STW it's great for a laugh!
Couple of ideas.
Well they could be playing crafty with the carrier.
Trying to manipulate the "average size" of their boxes.
They keep posting the maximum the contract stipulates before they get a surcharge.
When the load data comes in they see the box perameter has changed. They have a word with the rep who adjusts the carriage on the accounts, because they're such good customers.
Then when they do send big boxes, they are relatively speaking not so big. Bikes do not then receive the massive surcharge.
Packets are too small and get easily lost, especially the journey they go through. Maybe testing whether it's lost or stolen parcels they are suffering?
They use boxes because:
Posties who's bags are full, left the jiffybags behind at the depot instead of delivering them.
In town, all boxes are delivered by a separate van so issue above is removed. (the fact that you still get a "you weren't in" card doesn't seem to factor)
Boxes fit better into the lorries collecting from them, saving at least 1 lorry a day, so environmental reasons (bet they got a cheaper rate too).
Automatic packing saves man power.
Cardboard is recyclable, jiffy bags aren't as easy to, normally end up in waste.
Sure there were some others that I read in some article, basically its just cheaper for them.

Machines need power.
Jiffy bags can be re-used over and over again. Rather than needing to be recycled.
I order elsewhere now if the price allows, getting a bit pissed off with heading up to the PO to pick up barrel adjusters, powerlinks, etc.
it's stupid. I do not have enough time to go to the post office and pick up my dustcaps!!!
However I love crc.
The boxes fit better argument is tosh.
They will fill royal mail "yorks" to the hilt with jiffy bags, hundreds of them. A york is 2ft square and about 4ft high.
The trunking vehicles are designed to carry them from 7.5 tonne taillifts to double decker trailers. They are the argument for using smaller packaging.
And recycling wise, I'm still using jiffy bags from years ago!!
The cost of a box outweighs the amount they lose each year due to people calling up (having received the item through the letterbox) and making out that they havent received anything yet.
except for the parcel force person who decided to throw a large box over
the 7 foot garden fence and potentially damage it. so they didnt get a sig.
crc did sort it out superbly tho.
MrsMW ordered some riding glasses and a pair of shorts from Rose. They turned up today in a normal size box that also contained two free packs of energy sweets and a pretty nice looking free mug too.
Yep, I had the same A4 box delivered today, must admit I pannicked as I thought i'd bought the wrong item ( teaches me not to drink and buy!)
0.5mm bb spacer and some freebie zero tablets (thanks mr crc) but why the big box as I re-use the jiffy bags 8)
