I have taken my rear disc brake caliper off my bike today to clean. when i have gone to put it back on i have noticed that there is hardly any thread left on the frame bolt holes. The bolts just slide in and out. Is my frame buggered or can these holes be rethreaded? Appreciate your advice.

Erm, the threads are usually on the brake itself, not the frame. The frame holes are just holes. The bolts pass through then thread into the brake.

Most disc mounts are like this:

Unless it's like this?

You could get a good LBS to heli-coil (Re-thread) them.

thanks elfinsafety. not sure why i thought the frame holes were also threaded. Its obvious now looking that they were never threaded. now i know why i leave any tinkering to the lbs.

If somebody's been a bit liberal with the threadlock, a layer can build up inside the frame holes meaning that you have to turn the bolt to unthread it out of the frame. Just a push or a tap on the bolt head is often enough to clear all of that junk out of the hole letting the bolt move freely.

Hi shedful, thats probably why i thought it was threaded. there was quite a lot of threadlock in there. brake is now secured to frame.
