My front (left hand) 105 St-5700 10 spd shifter has developed a problem where when shifting up onto the big ring the small shift lever gets stuck out and the brake lever doesn’t return back fully either. If I give the small lever a nudge with my thumb it returns easily and is ready to shift again. Can this be fixed and if so how, is it a DIY job or should I just buy some more shifters and be happy with the 6 years use I’ve had from it? Cheers in advance.

Sometimes it's a frayed cable catching in the mechanism, take out the cable and have a look.

105 10 speed were notorious for this. As above, check the cable first. If not I suspect it's new shifter time.

Just had a look at the cable and it’s fine, the shifter seems to operate fine though without the cable tensioned, not sure that helps though!

Managed to upload some pics which might help, on the second pic there is what looks like a little tab part that keeps getting stuck out and I think that is what’s causing the issue, it’s not returning properly and if the small shifter does not get stuck out, I have to manually press the tab bit in or it won’t shift, hope that makes sense. Any ideas? Cheers

Also if I need a new shifter, what’s compatible with a 5700 10 spd front mech as I can only find used ( and expensive ) 5700 shifters! I’ve read that tiagra 4700 won’t work, is that true? Cheers again.

4700 has the newer actuation ratio that only works with the long arm or newer toggle cam mechs.

You can just replace the internals of your shifter - Madison have them in stock, and any LBS can order it post-free. Part no is “6TH 9804” and it retails at £49.99.

How old is the cable? My first set of 105 shifters went like this and I thought they were borked but I stuck a new inner in as an experiment and it was fine. It seems they’re very sensitive to a bit of a sticky cable.

Edit to add, mine was the same series as that, and the cable I had in there wasn’t very old. It was this time of year it went too.

Cheers, I’ll give the bike a real good wash as it’s pretty manky at the moment and replace the cable ( inner and outer ) and see how I get on, cheers.

I have a pair of 105 5600 10 speed levers in a parts bin that you can have. I’m not certain if they are compatible but they are yours if you want them! PM me if helpful.
