Have put off going to Afan for sometime due to the spate of bike thefts.

Has anything been done to improve things, as thinking of going this weekend?

Cheers

Like taking a decent lock? Surely it's your responsibility?

Couldn't agree more, I have plenty of decent locks and will take all the precautions I can but if there is still an organised gang at large, I would rather not go and put my bike at risk.

Life's too short. Do you not go outside because of murderers and rapists? Do all you can to be safe, leave the rest to the insurers, go have fun.

go and wildcamp up in the forest and nobody will be able to find your bike.

LoL.

With all respect, if you have nothing of any real value to add to my post then please go and amuse yourself elsewhere.

Flattish.

That is the other option I am looking at.

I think that both Flatfish and myself have given you wisdom.

I am after facts, not "wisdom" or opinions!

For example;

A. Has anyone been arrested in connection with the previous thefts.

B. Has the centre installed any extra security/bike lock ups etc.

Those kind of things would be useful too me.

How stupid of me to expect a sensible answer on this forum. ๐Ÿ™‚

We camped at Glyncorrwg about this time last year for the weekend. The Yeti tribe meeting was on at the time. The little ****ers stole alot of bikes we locked our bikes in a secure lockup by old guy who runs the fishing pond he let everyone use it and opened it up about 9am next morning. If you leave your bike outside no matter how good the lock is the b*****ds cut through it.
That was last year right enough so not sure the how it has been recently but going on that past experience I wouldn't use the campsite again.
Happy camping ๐Ÿ˜‰

We camped there for several days at the time when there seemed to be lots of posts about this and had no problems. It's just common sense really, don't ever leave your bikes unattended (that includes on car roof or in boot of car), don't leave anything you value in your tent. Don't rely on locks, if they come, they will come with appropriate equipment.
We cycled to the pub every night, put them where we could see them, cycled back again. Overnight, bikes were locked in cars (next to tent), or to trees and right next to peoples heads in tents. If we went across to the cafe, we took our bikes. We were quite cautious, but not paranoid about it.

Whereas that's an objective response?

If you leave your bike outside no matter how good the lock is the b*****ds cut through it.
You'd need an angle grinder to get through my 'hardcore' Dlock, and it'd still take you 10 minutes. I couldn't sleep through that.
OP, I apologise, I was trying to be helpful.

I lock mine up at Afan

or you could get a Lion and sellotape it to the handlebars and put poo on the saddle.

A. Has anyone been arrested in connection with the previous thefts.

not sure

B. Has the centre installed any extra security/bike lock ups etc.

couldn't say as it's been a while

If you wildcamp you could take some rope and suspend it over a tree branch, this works for bears.

HTH

I will now go amuse myself on Mumsnet and although my reply may be of no use it is at least a bump.

ours have been fine locked to the tow hook of the van, although out of sight in the awning.

have heard just as much about theves following cars with bikes to services but never had problems there either (never take long, try and leave someone in the van or using chain lock to lock the bikes to the rack)

There are bears?

The bears have bikes?

I stayed at Glyncorrwg camp site about four weeks ago. Both nights an old boy came around asking if we wanted to secure our bikes in the industrial unit next door the MTB center. on the first night the bikes went in and were locked together, not to an anchor point though. On the second night I left mine in the back of my car. I was quite happy with it there as it was only 3 or four meters from my tent.
I guess theft can happen anywhere, even when you're out on your bike. You may as well go to Afan, be as careful as you can and have a cracking weekend.

Ah the Afan "secure bike storage" - which is opened at 9am in the morning and left open. Well meaning of them but don't rely on that alone, I'd rather have the bike close to me.

Or alternatively, theres an excellent campsite about 10 mins drive from Afan. Google 'Glen y Mul farm' and you should find it.

Its very bike friendly and is one of the only campsites in UK that allows open fires. Its run by a top bloke called Ian. They have a couple of very large dogs at the entrance, so no one is getting in without alerting the dags.

I also would not camp at Glencorrwg due to its reputation for bike theft. Last time I was there, i saw loads of top end bikes lying around outside the cafe, the shop and tents - no wonder its easy pickings for the scum.

Isn't there also a campsite at the Afan visitor centre down the road?

Thanks for all the replies.

Seems like not much as changed since were last there.

It's a shame as always enjoyed staying at Glyncorrwg in the past.

Whilst I never let my bike out of my sight and take all precautions in securing it up, I would rather stay somewhere where I can relax a bit more without constantly watching my back.

I could also do without the hassle of having my bike nicked two weeks before I go to the Alps.

Think I will persue that campsite 10 miles or so away.
