Is it possible to weld rack mounts to a to frame?

Is it a good idea?

I commute on an on one scandal. 4 miles on the road each way, that occasionally gets extended to 10 or 20 miles of paths and mild trails.

It has a rack held on with p clips as the frame has no mounts for a rack or mudguard.

Is it possible to get rack mounts welded on? I broke a p clip and had the rack bouncing into the cassette last week.

The cheap solution is clearly just carry spare p clips for the 3 times I've broken one in the last  3 years/ 3000 miles. However I'd like to put my 15kg 2 year old on her child seat on the back of this bike. P clips aren't going to cut it.

Thanks!

Aluminium Scandal, rather than titanium Vandal?

Sorry but the thread title is a tad unclear. Is a "to frame" a typo with too many words or an error on "ti"?

Anyway, welding to an heat-treated aluminium frame will probably undo the treatment and promote snappage.

Welding ti should be doable, but check with a professional in either case

Too late to edit the title.

It's a titanium vandal frame. I've seen a few of theses broken on the internet so I'm quite keen to avoid snappage!

Is it possible to get rack mounts welded on safely to a titanium frame? I broke a p clip and had the rack bouncing into the cassette last week.

My understanding is welding ti isn't likely to successful longterm!

Also, a 2yr old at 15kg. Would be better on a font-mounted seat like the MacRide? Loved using ours but kids well and truly beyond that age now.

You can get racks that mount on rear axle:

https://www.tredz.co.uk/.M-Part-AX3D-Disc-Compatible-QR-Rear-Rack_215368.htm

and some that are seatpost and clamp like this:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/West-Biking-Universal-Adjustable-Equipment/dp/B074Z8PVNV

Much cheaper than welding.

Yeah, just buy a better rack solution: Ortlieb Quickrack, Aero Spider etc. I've used the former on a Scandal without issues.

2 year old on a bike. A kids ride shotgun seat is good. Means you can chat to them easily and they can't pull the bike off balance as easily.

I may have a MK1 for sale with pogees.

I have a kids ride shotgun,.my daughter  loves it until she gets tired so the other bike is festooned with a.rear seat, shotgun, mini handle bars and a bag for snacks and emergency nappies.

My bike is148mm boost at the back. I saw a through axel that allows the rack to be bolted to the axel

The idea of getting a puncture and having to change the rear rack as well as the puncture on the way to work seems quite an effort.

@matt_outandabout do you know if there Is a 148mm boost version of the qr axel rack you linked? I can't see one on treds. Also would I have to take the rack off to change a puncture?  Thanks 😊

If it's just for luggage, these are a much stronger alternative to p clips available in different sizes.

https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/carriers-racks/14mm-tubus-clamp-set-rack-eyes-for-seat-stay-mounting/

For a rear seat can you not use one of the hamax ones that clamp to the seat tube? I feel those are probably a more comfortable ride than the rack mounted ones, although haven't sat in one myself!

I'd just buy a cheap seat post and mound a seat post clamping rack to that and swap it out for your regular seat post and saddle for MTBing.

If you want mounts welded speak to Ted James Designs who's near Stroud Gloucestershire 👌🏻

Thanks @petefromearth ! Those look ideal😊

We have both types of seat in the house. I'm fairly sure the seat tube clam one will interfere with the rack.

So mild worry about killing the frame+ cost means the stronger clamps are a winner

Stauff clamps are the answer.

I’d go thru axle and avoid a seattube clamping child seat on a titanium frame at all costs.

You want one of these. Don't clamp levers onto the seatpost if you can avoid it.
