How does it happen when you see an advert on the forum, selling for instance 3 components. I'll use Merlin pricing as an example as it's usually about the lowest online. Crankset, asking 70, Merlin 110. Dropper post, asking 140, Merlin 180. Cassette, asking 50, Merlin 35. Surely the first thing you do before putting anything on here is Google to see the new price. This isn't aimed at a particular advert or person, I've just seen a few of them over Xmas and been tempted to add a dreaded pricing spoiler.

Its frowned upon to point out if you don't agree with peoples prices.

If you're interested in the part make an offer otherwise its no concern how much people are asking for stuff.

IMHO.

Sellers out to get as much as they can, the buyer is out to spend as little as they can.

The seller has no interest in finding their wears cheap new, why should the bother?

It's in the buyers interest to check if it's cheaper elsewhere, if they don't, good news for the seller, if they find it cheaper new, nowt wrong in privately pointing out to the seller and asking if they can have the item cheaper.

The classified police do wind me up, nowt better to do with your time?

Stuff is worth what people will pay, if they don't know it's cheaper elsewhere or even new, no issue to them. If they can't be bothered to use the readily available tools to find other prices, their loss.

I do wonder why people don't check online pricing first, RRP is utterly irrelevant. If a part/bike doesn't sell, then it's overpriced. It really is that simple. People always seem to overprice XT brakes and reverbs in particular.
Doesn't bother me though, I just don't buy it.

Agree with that, but you look at the advert a day or so later and both the sensibly priced parts have gone, and the other part has to be reposted, usually with a fiver off which still makes it more expensive than you can buy it new, and more than other similar components advertised by other people.

Just out of interest adrec, why are you getting bothered by it?

If you want the cassette but you think it's overpriced, email the seller with your offer (explaining why if necessary). They will say yes or no; if yes woopy-do, if no then move on and don't lose any sleep over it. Life's too short 8)

I would agree with the "why get bothered" issue - but for those trying to sell it is a bit pointless. And they they spam the hell out of the forum by endlessly listing the same over-priced tat every couple of days.

TBH, I have never seen anything in the for sale section that cannot be obtained from elsewhere at a better price.

I'm not in a flap about it, it's just weird. Poor sales technique, Sir Alan would be having a fit

Agree that pointing out the RRP on here is a waste of time.
Also those listing the same items 4 or 5+ times and not reducing their prices to sell the thing seems a strange way to go about it.

Perhaps it's because there's more haggling on stw than on Delhi market

Market economy. Price how you like, and decide what you're willing to pay. And agree, it's bad manners for 3rd parties to butt in with prices elsewhere.

Seen loads of things sell 2nd hand on eBay for higher price than new in the highstreet before, and that's an economy where people are generally thought to be trying to buy tat cheaper than normal.

Certainly do get amused when people post in the forum with "why is nobody interested in my...." posts, though.

I've implemented a "2 pointless e-mails or one stupid statement" policy. Exceed that and I no longer consider it rude to just ignore them. Not worth the effort of getting into ping-ponging e-mails whilst they haggle it down to the cost of postage (if I'm feeling particularly mean I've told people the parts gone in the bin rather than sell to them as "I don't know what it's worth and your offer was less than it would have cost to post").

Gave up selling on here years ago, it's worse than SDH used to be.

I've no problem with someone mistakenly putting an inflated price up. Often people have much to sell and it is hard to keep track of all of the latest deals on the stuff you are trying to sell. When they stubbornly stick to the inflated price and refuse to haggle... well that is just the sellers loss.

I never got that rule tbh . What is wrong with pointing out an item is over priced compared to what can be bought online?
Its a service to the seller and the buyer IMHO
The only reason to object is because you think it ok to over charge folk for things.

The one that really annoys me is 4 year old forks - Reba for example being sold based on the price now and folk asking for more than they paid for them new. Think mine were £150 ish new and worth £50 now as they work.

I have never seen anything in the for sale section that cannot be obtained from elsewhere at a better price.

Then you are not looking very hard
I last bought some wheels for £45 with postage which included tubes and 80% life Bonty Mud x's and rotors - Deore and alex rims but hey I have a spare wheel set for a little over what the tyres would have been

I tend to price based on recent completed eBay listings. If after 4 or 5 tries on here it doesn't sell then it goes on eBay at 99p start no reserve. So far most things have gone for +\- 15% of what I've asked for. A couple of anomalies. I sold a set of 36s for £150 more than I was asking for on here despite lots of interest all I had was tyre kickers. Wheelsets always seem to go cheaper than I expect. My hand built set which cost £300 sold for £82. Win some loose some.

You could always send the chap a email with a link to Merlin's site and your offer.

i only click things that interest me, last thing i clicked on was a used 29er Hans Dampf, once in the thread it was listed for more than on-one have them for,

surely in a "community" you should point out the pricing error, for at least the unsuspecting buyer who hasnt seen they are cheap elsewhere?

if you knew you "mate" was about to pay over the odds for something they could get cheaper new, you would say something right?

"The Rule" is BS and only there so the classifieds don't turn into an argue-pit needing lots of modding input.

My experience on selling on STW is to inflate price by 10-20% as most try and barter you down
