Never really understood why people got upset about the short headtubes on the 29ers- that gives you choice. Stick a tall stem or a riser on it or spacers to get the bars to the same place... But with a long head tube, you can't add unspacers to lower the bars. Personally I reckon that all bikes should have the absolute shortest headtube that's workable for the design.

Agreed with Northwind on the headtube thing.

Slam that stem - as someone else said 🙂

I have a Titus 29er and that has a headtube not much more than 100mm

Yeah that's ok Northwind but when your 6.3 on a 20inch frame with a tiny 100mm long headtube then its about 4 20mm spacers at least and that looks nuts! Both the 26er and 29er On Ones are like that. Even then it feels short with all the spacers, maybe on the 16 inch frmaes its ok. There is a reason that most big brand company's make headtubes a lot longer on the Small to the XL size of there bikes. I liked the Old Kona Joe Murray design frames with the larger headtubes. They were great geometry for taller riders.

I guess thats what you get with small brand companys they prefer to make square pegs fit in round holes and make some marketing jargon up to try and hide the fact its all about saving money and making it easier for them. I think thats an area where Brant is a master of the art!

I love it reading posts from riders saying the products are shite and Brants getting no more of my money. Hilarious....as fickle as football supporters !

Taking a product from conception to market is rediculously expensive, regardless of the product and market. I was involved at GM. To bring frames to the market in that space of time is pretty impressive, but for that value compromises are made. OK, there were some 'issues'....but on a frame for £250 or so....FFS !?! I've had 4 O-O frames, and had to fettle with 2, but sort of felt a little more connected to them. PLus I agree with seth-enslow666, how many Trek / Spesh / Kona / Giant employees, let alone designers come onto this forum and offer support and answer questions....

If you don't like them, don't buy them, go ride a consumer bike like all the other hundreds of thousands of magazine followers.

Or, a riser stem, or a riser bar. I've seen plenty of these in 20" without a huge stack of spacers.

What size bike do you ride Northwind a 16inch by any chance!

Sticking huge rise bars and high rise stems effects the ride of a bike and the angle etc a lot more than having a long steerer tube going straight up to the bars. Having all those huge rises on the stems and bars is no substitute.

Nope. But then I'm not talking about my bike, am I? Your taste in riding position and parts means you need lots of spacers, but others get by fine without it. And this is why it's a good idea- people who want lower bars or different parts than you are catered for, and so are you.

<edit for your edit>

What on earth are you talking about? What matters is where the grips are. It makes absolutely no difference at all how the grips get to that position, whether it's done with spacers or stems or bars.

It is great that he engages with his customers directly and is (I think) a large contributing factor in why the kit is so popular.
Having said that (and I have no axe to grind with on-one, ragley or Brant); this

OK, there were some 'issues'....but on a frame for £250 or so....FFS !?!

Is a daft comment. Regardless of cost items should be fit for purpose. You should be able to fit a headset and not have to refinish the frame within a few months of purchase or file bits down/off.

Ha I'm not getting into a petty argument with you Northwind. But actually it does make a difference go try it some time and then you won't have to come out with rhetoric! But yes black is white if you say so my friend.

I have a 20" Scandal, it has one 5mm spacer when geared and two 5mm spacers when SS, I have low rise bars as well.

ah, the use of 'my friend' intended to indicate anything but and inflame the situation further.

I took the news to mean that Brant had had enough of the QC and delivery problems with Ragley/CRC/Hotlines and decided to move before it got ridiculous. Can't say I blame him and think that some of the accusations on here are a bit on the fringe side to be honest. I wonder if he shot JFK and helped fake the moon landings too......

I wish him the best of luck at Titus/OnOne and hope he has some new ideas to take with him.

I completely agree. I have had 4 On-one/Planet x bikes and no issues with any of them. Always found Brant helpful and approachable. In the circumstances, I hope he is also thick skinned.

I bought one of your cheap bikes, Richards. As a result, I own your soul. If I am a bit depressed about the flow of a berm at one of the non-descript trail centres that I ride week-in week-out, then I should be able to call you at 3am and you should listen to what I have to say on the matter.

Blue Pig? Poo Pig. I'm going to buy a Dialled Bike instead now because I know where Mike lives, I know which window is for his bedroom, I have a ladder and I can watch him undress. But if he complains......

I don't have time for ugly goats. Call me what you want but that's just the way I am. I mean seriously look at this

I supposed I should mention something related to this thread. I've had a Ragley Piglet, I sold it now because I didn't like it, it just wasn't for me. No problems with the build quality on it. Good luck to Brant in whatever he does in his life.

When I were a lad all this were Cotic Soul..

Re: goats, not bad, best to eat the kids, keep the mothers for milk, excellent for garden clearances and UBF moments with humankid/goatkid interface.

Our garden was high up behind a 20ft retaining wall, and our goat was on a round concrete block with a chain. Every so often you had to "move" the goat, as a child this was only possible by rolling the concrete block (the old man had fitted a swivel to the chain ). I once accidentally rolled the block through the fence and it dropped down to the yard below, 20 ft drop, 15 ft chain. Goat pinned to fence with me frantically trying to pull up the block..

best to eat the kids

I don't think the Mr B the gentleman rhymer has a song about cannibalism but, rest assured, it's very much frowned upon in polite society.

[edit] I went on a bus journey in burkina faso where they just tethered a load of goats to the roof of the thing. You could tell when the g-forces cut in as there'd be this frantic scrabbling of goaty feet up, down and across the bus as they tried to compensate for it. I've still got a mental image of these goats up there in flying hats and goggles looking nonchalant as the minibus careers along at 60mph.

I am speaking from experience. It makes no difference. It is impossible for it to make any difference. What difference are you imagining it does?

Kingtut is also speaking from experience obviously- are you going to patronise him too? Since he's one of the people taking advantage of the low steerer which you think is somehow wrong.

Well here's my muddy 2p.

Well I have 5 pairs of Mary bars and one Carnegie at the moment plus my 29er rigid Inbred SS. All Great. Had a classic Inbred and 2x 456's in the past plus many of the Moles have Inbreds as well, especially for Winter hack bikes.

One of the plus points was the way Brant dealt with my first ever purchase when the Inbred frame turned up with a cable stop instead of a straight through guide. It has had an affect on the rest of my bike purchases though as I'm always looking for a bargain (...btw Charlie the Bike Monger has some nice Kona Big Unit frames atm...)

I've only actually spoken to him once on the phone and met him briefly at a Earls Court Cycle show. He didn't seem to want to engage which was a shame but that could have been down to all sorts of reasons. I also find his Shedfire site with his Twitter feed a bit weird but maybe it's a Northern thing as it does also seem similar to what used to happen at On-One.

I wasn't tempted by a Ragley, seemed s bit too slack for Surrey Hills but Al rides a Ti and seems very happy with it.

I have thought that On One might have bitten off more than they can chew and there is a definite "distance" between the company and the customer in my opinion, especially with no forum and product info scattered all across the site. In fact a few weeks back it looked like they might be pulling out of 29ers as they had just 2 frames listed (one was that weird Sling thing) and no mention of the others, not even showing out of stock. Maybe Brant will change that, maybe he won't.

Anyway, this is all just opinion (granted some based on experience....I've had some shite Fords and Vauxhalls btw), everyone has their own truth but I'm really not sure about his taste in music......

;o)

I've had 4 on ones
Still have 2 853 frames - love em for the riding I do.
had a few emails of brant - short but ok
Met him at HTN last year and he was nice enough in his own special way.

If i broke my 853 SS frame I'd try to get something just like it.

That is all

That comment makes no sense- Kingtut isn't right or wrong, he just has a personal preference. If it had the tall headtube which you insist is "right", he couldn't use his setup. So why is that better?

Low head tubes allow more setups, simple as that, and some people prefer a lower setup than you do.

But go on, tell me what difference there is between spacers and a tall stem, or between spacers and a riser? As long as the control surfaces end up in the same place.

I'd like to see Brant bring out a new Titus hardtail and call it the Goat.

With a really short headtube to keep seth-enslow666 😉

they only stay up there 'cos toys19 has slung a weight over the other side of the dam and tied the goat to it with very thin thread.

I alwways thought lots of spacers was a bad thing as they had a tendency to shift slightly with impacts to the forks and could loosen the preload on the headset.

I have no idea whether this is *fact* but it seemed possible. I am ambivalent about the whole HT length thing though (actually, I can see a shorter one is, on average, probably more versatile).

And the thread rambles on, mleh.

Top goatage there on the res'. Impressive.
