... the same, for use on some Avid elixirs.

Say if I bought some DOT 5.1 fluid that's for cars, would it be ok?

Cheers

Then why does finish lines stuff say "designed specifically for mountain bike disc brakes"

If all DOT 5.1 stuff is the same?

The key is, it says that on the label. Thats the MTB specific bit.

Does anybody use anything different from the Finish line or avid stuff then, if so what brand out of interest?

Halfords. Cheap, convenient and made to the same standards.

I've been using some generic dot 5.1 stuff from Halfords and my brakes seem to be working fine.

The best stuff you can get, imho is Motul RBF600. The RBF stands for racing brake fluid, it's for motorbikes. It has a higher boiling point, especially good if your riding is more gravity based. You might have to change it more often as it absorbs moisture more than the normal stuff. It all absorbs moisture though so I change mine every twelve months anyway.
