I'm after a hub gear wheel for an old GT frame with vertical dropouts. Will be used for commuting. I thought this would be cheap but looking at ebay it's like £200 for a Shimano Alfine!!!!!!!!!Are there alternatives that don't go into triple figures

so you'll need to budget for the sprocket, fitting kit, shifter and wheel build on top of the £50 for the hub.... so still probably over £100 unless you can find the bits second hand.

yes, I will need to budget for the above. I'd looked at some 8 speed Alfine but I guess that's top gear. I'm not familiar with this kind of thing. So don't really know whats available.

Go for the alfine 8 for commuting rather than anything cheaper - the seals are excellent compared to lesser models. Commuting in the UK can be as much of a s**tfest as going off road in terms of the amount of water splashing around.

Rosebikes are doing Alfine 8 delivered to the UK for £140. That is the hub, sprocket, cassette joint and shifter. £60-70 for the build spokes and nipples and you're away. You'll need to think about how to adjust the chain tension on vertical dropouts. There is an alfine tensioner - again look on Rosebikes, or just use an old derailleur stopped to the right chainline.

The Alfine tensioner (if it's the same as the 11) is pretty poor, not least because it mounts under the axle bolts rather than fixing to the mech hanger. Pretty much any SS tensioner should do the job better.

8 should be enough for most commutes and seems more reliable than the 11.
