Hello folks,
First time poster here looking for some help.
I recently got a commencal uptown 29er frame off their outlet site (119 euros from 400ish) that I am wanting to build up into a commuter bike.
On the website it says it takes an integrated headset 1 1/8th 45x45 degree "campagnolo" style headset. A wee bit of looking on google and it says that means it will have an OD for the bearings of 41.8mm.
On getting the headset the bearings dont just pop into the frame like I was expecting, they dont even seem to push in with my bearing press as they are marginally too big and I dont want to force it.
Commencal maintain the 41.8 is the right size and that their bearings need to be forced in but I'm not convinced.
Anyone else had this issue? I think a lot of their frames use the campag style headset and was just wondering if they really do need to be pressed in unlike other integrated bearing designs.
Thanks.
Got a vernier ?
Campy also have used a 41mm od 45x45 headset bearing in the past
Could account for why it doesnt fit ?
Campy integrated headsets aren't pressed in, the just sit in the cup that are already in the headtube. I wouldn't be happy trying to force them in.
LBS job?
Hi trailrat,
Yeah, when I looked on the web it said the campag standard was 45x45 and 41.8 which I confirmed with commencal. When I was looking however I saw the 41mm one mentioned which was what caused me to question what I was doing. I just hope these bearings dont turn into hens teeth in the future!!
And yes, got a digital caliper coming in the post, have always needed one and now I have the excuse.
As soon as commencal mentioned foecing the bearings in I thought something didnt sound right. I can understand them needing a wee bit of persuasion for a nice fit but pressing them in seems off!
Thanks
Looking at the web I see that you can get a cane creek italian headset that is 41mm OD with 35x45 angles. If I bought the entire headset that should fit ok shouldn't it as the 35 degree angle refers to the inside of the bearing which touches the headset as opposed to the frame?
