I'm going nuts with a square taper 1x crank chainline

I've read I should mount the chainring INSIDE the spider, but not sure if that is meant to be on the frame side or outside

please help
?!?

Frame side of the tabs. If you're mounting it where the middle ring of a 3x crankset would've been, I've found it's best to space it in by 2mm with spacers (which also means you can use the original bolts rather than sourcing shorter single ring bolts).

I opened this expecting a picture of a wandering spider in a bunch of bananas, with you asking if you should put it in the garden or the shed.

Disappointing.

Glad you got your answer though!

Reading that back, my answer assumes you're repurposing an old 3x square taper crank which had a correct chainline on its BB to start with...

Just try both and see which works best? If it's square taper that could change with BB. Eg. Maybe inside with a 113 axle, outside with a 110
