looking to go 1x9 on my 09 orange 5 im running shimano xt chainset at moment whats the best set up for the 5 ....

remove all the rings.
the front mech
the shifter.

fit a single ring specific front ring

a short cage rear mech

and a chain device

check chain length

done

ride

enjoy

I'd have a 32t upfront so you can still climb and I'd even be tempted to go 12-36t outback (but I live where there are lots of steep hills)

32t single ring with E13 guide here. Running 11-32 at the back.

About to move up to 34t front with 11-34 at the back now my legs have got used to the single ring. 32t is a bit too spinny for the sprints. Also have 36t for Alpine duties.

Depending on the chainguide and chainring you use you might have some clearance issues on the swingarm, but it works very well here.
