[#3862069]

...tonight I got some jumping tips from a jedi apprentice, Tom Slowrider Smith; kind of like Luke Skywalker teaching an Ewok.

Anyway, as a result (and following a somersaulting tumble into a ditch), I jumped my first ever gap jump, and now want a jedi lesson.

All of 6 feet, but I'm well happy. Video just encoding....

Pook, Pro Ride Guides (of current MBUK fame, they're doing the MBUK mag skills features this year) are Yorkshire based and considered to be very good, they operate mostly at Stainburn, but elsewhere as well. They do a jump focused course, but I think that might be elsewhere (Gisburn/Hamsterly maybe).

Skill coaches are ten a penny these days. If Aline are also Sheffield based then that's at least three with another on the way just in this city.

Good work Pook!

Certainly no lack off commitment coming in to that!

@ Jedi
Tony you'll be pleased to know I was able to utilize a fair few of the skills you taught me and Jamie in the board park on a recent snow boarding holiday.

It's a good feeling when the work you have done on your bike skills improves other sports. Happy days!

thepodge

Totally agree. However, I do not feel they will all have the same coaching format or deliver to the same standards. I guess its like saying teachers or university lectures are ten a penny.

Ray, that was kind of my point, though badly put.

There are loads of coaches, finding a good one and not just going with whoever is important.

Was great fun Pook, think I was buzzing as much as you when you nailed it!

As podge says you aren't short of choice when it comes to coaching, I've bee to a couple myself. It's not just about the format or qualification though. For me it was the difference between going to a nice bloke who is an alright coach and a nice bloke who can demonstrate a perfect example of technique as many times as you ask, pick up on your learning style quickly and be able to tell you exactly what you did right and wrong time after time even when you think he is busy giving someone else advice!

On the subject of coaching standards, I've seen bits of the books that accompany coaching qualifications and some of it doesn't seem to add up. I'm no expert though, perhaps leave that debate to those who have done the qualification!

Oh, I'm having that gap properly next time too...

Agree. Definitely not about the qualification. Again I think you could say this about any job or profession.

At the end of the day its about how you are judged by the person you are coaching. If the coach has taught a lot of people, and has gained an excellent reputation, it is probably because they are excellent at what they do (even if they dont hold any qualifications). That said, in my experience, the vast majority of people need to be taught how to coach / assess abilities / break down techniques etc.

my old frame was like that, my new frame I have more trouble manualling, so I measured the chainstays, exact same length ๐Ÿ˜•

Nice video. Obviously the tuition isn't working too well! But don't give up pook! I think you haven't found the right tutor just yet! You look very "stiff" on a bike, but with the right tuition you can overcome this. Please stick with it and dont ever give up! We were all beginners once! I've only been seriously riding 6 months and I've come a long way on my own, may I add! Some of us need that extra help though, which is fine and nothing to be ashamed of. Good luck and I hope you find the right tutor. Biking will change your life! ๐Ÿ™‚

pook is proper fast and smooth on a bike, that's his first ever gap jump so a bit of stiffness is understandable. you are probably right on the tutor bit though, i just told him crap that i thought would make him have a go ๐Ÿ˜‰

Pook that was grrrreat.

Now slowrider, it's all well and good teaching someone like Pook who is a decent rider, how about teaching a scary cat, whimp like me? That is a challenge ๐Ÿ˜‰

ha ha! cheers Rupert but I've been riding years - stiffness here as a result of a big off a minute before and it being my first gap jump. A few folks on here will tell you I'm hardly a beginner (though I must look crapola!)
