I HATE road riding in the rain. I commute by bike whatever the weather, I MTB whatever the weather, but I just cannot get my head round making myself go out on a road bike in the wet, simply for the hell of it/training ride.
Got up at 6am this morning with the aim of being on the road for 7 and getting a couple of hours in before work. 6.55 It starts raing. Cue hissy fit "Waaaah diddums doesn't like going out in the nasty wet". I don't even have to ride my nice bike - could ride the commuter hack, but no, I just absolutely cannot cope with the pure misery/torture/whatever of riding tarmac in the wet. I know if I don't do it I'm going to get fat(ter) and stupid(er) but it doesn't help any. I just can't make myself do it when I know I'm going to get no enjoyment from it. But hate myself for being so damn weak for giving in to a bit of bloody water.
(Mr Edwards it's 2010 can you please think a bit before you write? MOD)
So i@m now sat at my desk, having commuted in and got wet anyway, with an additional layer of self loathing on top of all the other usual hangups.
So what's the trick to making riding round in pointless circles in the pissing rain on tarmac something to look forward to?
Mmmmm - wonder how long this thread has got to go unmodded.
MTFU ๐
So basically the fact that you like men is somehow related to the fact that you are not brave enough to ride a rode pink in the rain...
One word spring in my mind...
'Gay' the favourite word of modern-day school boys age 9-15,
oh ... and the odd suit too!

You have a good line in self-disgust, maybe you can harness that to overcome your loathing of the wet? ๐
I'm guessing the lack of motivation means you're not training for anything in particular? If that's the case then you could either:
1. Enter yourself for something in the not too distant future. This way you have something to aim for and a reason to push you out the door when it's nasty out.
2. Stop worrying about 'training' and just ride for fun. If this means not doing stuff that you don't enjoy, don't do it! It's pretty easy. Unless you have a specific reason to be training, why bother if it's not fun?
JonE - you have just motivated me to stop spending my mornings in my nice warm bed and get out and do some extra miles. Wet weather doesn't bother me - visibility with sleepy motorists does, though.
And, besides, I need to lose at least a stone by Christmas, and then some more in the lead up to next season.
Cheers you big, pink, fluffy bunny... ๐
You don't have to train ALL the time. Pick those mornings/evenings when the weather's kinder, dummy.
(I did 50miles of up-tempo riding after work in the dark/drizzle last night, BTW).
Err maybe he's at work and doesn't always have free time like others?
A turbo trainer and some DVDs or music works well for me when I want to train but not outside. Need to think hard to keep variety into the sessions, just churning out the miles is sole destroying.
just churning out the miles is sole destroying.
Yup. AND it wears your shoes out.

I quite enjoy riding in the rain, the secret is to stay warm tho'
You got up an hour before you left the house at that time in the morning?
If I'm leaving at 7, I get up at 6:50, pull on my kit, which I've sorted the night before and jump on the bike. I'm too sleepy to even really notice what's happening, but after 10 minutes when I'm warmed up and awake I don't really care either!
Did you really have to use the word Gay like that?
What can you not even suggest that gay people are all weak and pathetic any more Junkyard? It's political correctness gone mad.
Thing is, I very deliberately DO NOT TRAIN. Bar commuting, I ride for fun - "training" is far too serious and scientific and not fun. But the more I ride, the better I am, the more I enjoy the riding. My weekly 2 hour pre-work thrashes make a huge difference to my MTB fitness, so I want to keep it going over the winter. Road riding at night doesn't do it for me either - I want to enjoy the scenery.
Time wise, I'm relatively limited - especially if I want to ride my nice bike (which is part of the fun, and the justification for having the damn thing). This week for example, I was knackered yesterday from the weekend, today I pussyed out because of the weather, tomorrow, thursday and friday I'm on site so a)have to take the commuter hack which I can leave locked up on the street b)don't really fancy 30miles before work, then having to ride into town later, do an install then ride home again. Bang goes another week's opportunity.
Turbo? Now that really is self flagellation.
You have a good line in self-disgust,
Yup
maybe you can harness that to overcome your loathing of the wet?
I also have a good line in lazy useless waster....
Grumm, thankfully STW is the last bastion of men being manly in a 1973 way and we can apparently still ridicule people for their sexuality and call/infer/imply they are soft.
I think it also helps us attract ladies to the forum and to rides. We give of such a resonable and inclusive attitude. Now Rejoice and let the abuse of those who are not like us fly.
2010!
Christ oh lordy, now thats what i call a lie in this morning.
Hay, Jonedwards who won strickly?
