Anyone experienced them on slippy roots or was there not much difference? Was thinking about a pair this year and after the ride this afternoon I thought they would have come in handy on some sections.
I've got a pair of Pros still to test- obviously the day they arrived was the day the glacier at glentress melted ๐
I've got a spare, unused standard Spiker too if you're interested...
They grip like nobodys business but I wouldn't use them unless it's actually icy. Upgraded to a pair of Pros for the 29er and started breaking them in on the tarmac this morning ready for the freeze that is coming later in the week.
I've got some on my commuter & my AM Full susser (when needed).... 26" Ice Spiker'.
They are AWESOME!
Off road in the winter when its all frozen, and they grip like nobody's business, roots are treated with the same contempt as the earth is by the spikes !
You can pretty much ride as you would in the wet with them on, including leaning over onto the edges.
Very noisy though if you have a little on road section - kinda like riding over a road of crisps ๐
been running wintermarathons on my roadrat all winter.
made alot of my commute ridable when others have been walking ๐
got conti spikes on my 26" mtb , they are ok but not a patch on the ice spikes. still cant work out why they keep doing them in wide sizes - 2.1 etc ....
1.8 mud tire with ice spikes would be better as the 2.1 is hopeless in actual deep snow.
Just remember when you stop on ice and put your foot down that your shoes aren't as grippy as your tyres!
I remember my Nokian Hakkas being pretty good on roots year before last. Fantastic on the ice & compacted snow.
Sorry for the plug, but I have a new pair available FS (see it as PSA!)

First commute on Winter Marathons this morning. Chuffing heavy but grippy as a very grippy thing.
It's dumping with snow right now so today was a very good day to try them out!
I wouldn't mind the road sections on yesterdays ride but there was quite a bit of ice once the sun went down that was just rideable (nearly at that on-yer-ass point). The thought of riding ice spikers over wet roots nearer the end of the ride got me thinking as the mud tyres were all over the place. If anyone had experience of them being better than most normal rubber on wet roots as well as on the ice I'd consider a pair.
You're welcom to take my TB out for a spin Martin and try them out for yersel. They're ace ๐
I'd go and have a mare and break something knowing me! Thanks anyway. So have you ridden roots with them at all?
funny you ask! i discovered yesterday and was going to make a thread.. they are very good on wet roots indeed. shreds rotten slick wood where any rubber just slides sideways.
i have the cheaper Schwalbe ones about 1kg.

get them from Germany.
i'm going to die when i go back to normal tyres ๐
Aye I've had them round a wet Badaguish XC and they do give some extra purchase on roots as smiff says. They're a good all round winter tyre really for gloopy conditions, apart from the cost.
That's a place you would be thankful of spikes on a frosty day,John. Ta for the offer too.
Thanks Smiff, Well your're not going to believe this. Got in to work this morning and the boss gives me a 2.1 ice spiker with around 30 miles on it and a snow stud 1.9! I hadn't mentioned the need or want for them.
Moving on from 26 to 29ers has left them laying about in the shed taking up space so they had to go!
Snow stud is gash offroad btw. Astonishingly bad at snow.
Ice spikers are great on frozen ground bit sketcky on the road very good buy from Duetchland!I only ride mtb mind must be pretty scary on skinner tyres!
Finally all frozen so we can around rather better.
Out last night on Baildon Moor on the Marin with my Nokian Hakkas fitted (reckon to be much lighter than others). Absolutely brilliant stickyness; even made the slick patches on the road fun!
Second best ride of the year (numero uno was ride down from Rocque de los Muchachos on La Palma; a bit warmer though).
Lovely run round the puffer this afternoon, hopefully the conditions will last. Ice spikers are ace ๐
