... the policing costs for the Tour of Britain must be ridiculous. There have just been a couple of hundred police motorbikes gone along the top of my street all with ToB kit on. Policing that race must cost a fortune.

Some pretty impressive vehicles around though.

But surely you are indirectly paying for it. I know football clubs pick up some of the costs for match policing.

they have 64 motorbikes.

The police will be charging for this, they charge for any event requiring a police presence over and above the norm

maybe

"Our police escort is 64 motorbikes and the police bill comes into the hundreds of thousands of pounds - many of these other organisations and promoters simply do not have the funding.

The stage here is tomorrow and I suppose most will have heard of Bradley Wiggins. There are a few other pretty famous guys in there too.

Cavendish is riding the Tour of Missouri at the moment. He's just (narrowly) lost the Green jersey to Thor Hushovd... Replay of the TdF!

The motorcyles on the Tour are supplied partly by the police (who have the power to enforce a rolling road closure) and partly by the NEG (National Escort Group) who can't control traffic but can protect and police the race itself. Basically it's a group of people who give up their spare time to train to a certain standard to accompany races. They're used for most road races in the UK, they're paid by British Cycling as a qualified "volunteer marshal".

The remainder of the motorcycles are camera and publicity bikes, the teams themselves will sometimes have a bike or two in there to help get an accurate picture of the race.

I only saw about half that figure today, and half of those were NEG. Noticeably a lot but 64? There were only about 100 riders weren't there.
