[#3876437]

And so the saga continues...

7 and a half months since surgery (8 and half since I crashed!). I saw my consultant today.
"Sometimes, very rarely, when we go in for surgery we can damage the nerves and...."

They've ran out of possible explanations for why my arm is still causing me so many problems and that's what they've settled on!

Prognosis is it might fix itself at some point in the next year, or it might not and I'm being referred to the pain management team in the mean time. I'm hoping to be referred to another consultant (who I met whilst doing work experience and he seemed interested!) for another opinion 'cos I'm really hoping my consultant has missed something...

Anyway...it means that I still can't really ride my bike properly there's no sign of that changing for a while so I need cheering up (I am also not happy because it means I can't write very well, and has many implications for me doing lab work and stuff so really not what I wanted to hear!) . Just watched the video of many crashes on the Rheola downhill thread and that did bring a smile to my face, so singletrack I leave my happiness in your hands!

What's stopping you riding - is it ability to hold the bars comfortably or operating brakes/gears? If it's the latter then there's probably a number of options to switch those tasks to your 'good' side.

I'd practice writing with your wrong hand too, after a couple of weeks it gets a lot easier - you've been writign wioth your 'right' hand for most of your life so it's had lots of practice but you can train the other one too.

It's taken me the best part of 3 years post motorbike crash to get back somewhere near where I was before on a mtb. Nerve damage in a broken arm/wrist combo being a big barrier.

I had no idea it would take this long. Stay positive.

mike - I "acquired" 2 new bikes in January...I can spend no more on bikes for a little while ๐Ÿ˜›

Jamie - that's rather amusing - thanks!

wwaswas - brakes and gears aren't too much of an issue (at least not for short rides), but putting the necessary weight through my arm to hold on isn't a very pleasant experience and it then continues to hurt for ages afterwards. Riding one-handed isn't the same but I am gonna try some tri-bars (and even fancy trying a recumbent!)
have already started trying to write with the wrong hand. It's rather amusing, although I expect I could get it to a reasonable standard fairly quickly ๐Ÿ™‚ - Thanks!

Billy- cheers, 3 years is a long time! Well done for getting back into it ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks fasthaggis - that's a good video! You don't need bikes to fly though...I did a skydive a couple of weeks ago - think I'm missing the mtb adrenaline! ๐Ÿ˜›

I lost my right hand / fore-arm for a year (radial nerve palsy) and learnt to write like a child with my left. I also managed to roll ciggies one handed and ride my road bike by splinting up and bracing the arm. Not massively safe but it kept me riding! W*** was * though ๐Ÿ™ (Ninija edit).

Becky - that's downright miserable, poor you. ๐Ÿ™ I guess all you can do is seek another professional opinion and hope that it all gets x-rayed again.

As others have said, time could be the healer so try not to beat yourself up. Have you tried Ergon grips? They take a bit of getting used and the positioning of them but I found they helped after I had broken my wrist.

Good luck and try to stay positive. ๐Ÿ™‚
