What's good? (better than my awesome 6 year old Aldi one?)

Needs to have a zipped back pocket and zipped chest pocket would be nice

i've had a couple of Race Face ones (Hoodlum IIRC) over the years that have served me well - you can always get them discounted at CRC.
Fuzzhead Jr Sr has a Dare2B one that seems pretty good too

Decathlon/Go outdoors are probably the best place to take a look never had a problem with most of their stuff.

Just get a pertex top, far more versatile IMO, especially in purple

You can't beat the ALDI shells for value. Gore Phantoms are good, if a little heavy for this time of year. Although, you can zip of the arms & turn it into a gilet.

Currently, some good deals to be had in the Alpine Bikes sale http://www.alpinebikes.com/shop/clothing/bike-clothing/. Go instore if you can, as I'm sure they're cheaper.

Otherwise, shop around online, some of the DHB stuff on Wiggle is excellent value.

Good luck

My £10 new Aldi top provided wind and rain protection for this morning's commute. It won't give full protection for a biblical downpour, the arms are a little short and the tail rides up. But it packs down tiny, is vented, fits fine and is white so my jersey can be seen through it 8) .

EDIT: And I have Pearl Izumi Barrier convertible, but pack size doesn't even come close. It is however better in the heavy stuff.

No you don't.

Tried them...stick with a breathable waterproof, and a very light Gilet if it gets hotter

One thing I didn't like about my Phantom was the zips. Sugoi's take on this is to use magnets making it far more versatile http://www.wiggle.co.uk/sugoi-versa-convertible-jacket/
