I'm looking for some ideas for a new pair of tyres, my Scott scale came with a pair of Maxxis Ikons and they have been perfect until its started to get a bit muddy recently! I'm in Leicestershire so I rarely do any technical riding, just farm tracks and field edges with the occasional trip to the peaks. I think a lot of the magazine tyre reviews are aimed at enduro and trail centre use. So I'm basically after a pair of tyres that shed sticky mud without being draggy and give a bit more grip than my Ikons. Any ideas?

Rocket Ron's would be my tyre of choice.
in fact I use one on the front in summer with a Ikon on the back.
Front and rear Ron would be great this time of year.
Anything stickier a Maxxis Beaver is a good choice.
Thanks,
Max

If you're on 26" wheels I've got a pair of brand new maxxis medusa's that you can have for a good price

Beaver!

I have the 2in and they're well fast, as well as being good in mud - but I'd get the 2.25in next time for a bit of extra cush.

I'm on 29" wheels, the beaver seems to fit the bill perfectly, but I've not come across rocket rons before and they're only 18 quid each...

Beaver at the back, Shorty out front works for me - the Shorty has just a bit more bite when turning.

S-works storms are light and not too draggy for a (proper) mud tyre. The 29Er Dirty Dan is a skinny 2" job as well.

Beaver is good if you don't want a full-on XC mud tyre (which mostly are good at cutting through mud but bad at everything else)

XR Mud, Spesh Storm for XC mud tyres. For non mud specific, Spesh Ground Control, Vittoria Barzo are great choices

Thanks for the replies, I've ordered a pair of beavers. (I bet I go my whole life without using that phrase again!)

Sorry to hijack thread, I was looking at either beavers or Strom controls for a winter set of tyres and will be doing a few winter xc races, just wondering which is likely to be least draggy?

Mud X's, front and back, would be my choice.

Beavers are good soft ground tyres, but just be carful on hard / armored trails. The nobbles are quite soft, so do squirm around and can let go without warning.

I've just fitted a new tyre from Maxxis - the Forekaster - marketed as an aggressive XC tyre, for wet conditions. Think Maxxis version of the Nobby Nic. Haven't had a chance to run it properly yet though, but it certainly looks the part. It's a 29x2.35 so a bit of a wide boy in XC terms, but 2.2 are available, apparently...

Waiting for Extra to bring the 27.5x2.2 in, refuse to buy a nobby nic/ralph combination. Have an ardent race on the back which copes ok with all but the deepest/greasiest mud for local xc riding.

I've just fitted a pair of forekaster 2.35's. not as 'spiky' as the beavers but seems good so far as a good all rounder.
