Ah well. Worth a shot I spose.

Interestingly though; it must be quite difficult for Vegans, what with all the products made from animal bits, like gelatine, leather and other things.

Also, I was surprised that a Muslim woman was telling her kid in a supermarket that he coon't have any Haribo sweets because they're 'Haram'. I asked her why, genuinely interested, and she explained they are made using gelatine, which because of the low cost of production, is probably pork gelatine. The animals used probbly won't have been slaughtered according to Islamic guidelines either. She said she'd also heard of Jewish people not buying them as they're also not Kosher of course. I come from a Muslim family, but I'd not heard of this. I spose lots of people just don't know what's in the products they eat and use.

So I spose it can be a bit problematic at times, if you have certain religious or lifestyle choices which limit the stuff you can buy and use. Stuff most of us take for granted.

(She did quietly tell me it's a bloody good way of stopping her kids eating too many sweets as well. ๐Ÿ˜‰ )

Real ale (and possibly beer in general) would be out for a start due to the fining agents (fish based) used to clear it. So I'm out ๐Ÿ™‚

many sweets now say pork gelatine on them to help out on this front ..I know this from reading ingredients
TBH the most annoying thing is having to read non vegan specialist foods to check they have not added something every time you buy it ...cereal, biscuits, crisps etc
You also get things like donuts where some are ok [ co-op. tesco] and some are not.
Ginger biscuits /men are usually ok and some flapjacks.
EDIT: technically they dont need to say what they use as the finning agent as it is classed as a process not an ingredient. Plenty of vegan list sites that tell you what the manufacturers say though

The Halal ones are vegan - they do a big range that don't contain any animal products.

The texture's pretty bad though.

A good mate of mine is vegan and has ended up growing and making a lot of her own food because of manufacturers changing processes and ingredients.

Wouldn't be easier to not scrutinise the ingredients labels too much?

what the eyes don't see etc .......

It would be easier to not check ingredients but it would not make you a vegan.

Well I wondered that too. Her attitude is that if you are gonna do something, do it properly. On the upside she was a crap cook before she did it. Now she's a baker, a cook, an accomplished gardener, a brewer and has an encyclopedic knowledge of all of the local growers and providers of regional produce and their methods.

Pretty fycking cool actually.

Veggie/vegan trivia: Tunnocks Tea Cakes are one of the few veggie marshmallows!

Saddles are the tough one for a biker... I don't know of a good non-leather option.

Inner tubes have ground up fish bones or something inside them. A lot cheaper than talc.

So that's why they smell of fish then?

I'd always wondered about that. Now I have achieved enlightenment. Thank you.
