One of my hunt road carbon rims has delaminated badly after a meeting with one of our lovely local potholes. The quote from hunt to replace the rim, £400, is half the cost of complete wheelset, £779. Reason being it's cheaper to get wheelsets than single rims. Surely not?!!!
There is a hefty crash discount available of 35% but still....
Is that £400 less 35% = £260 for a crash replacement rebuild?
I’d guess the bulk of the cost of a carbon wheel set is the rims. By the time someone has had to rebuild the wheel that sounds like a pretty good deal
Inc fitment just shy of £290
Doesn't seem bad for a carbon rim replacement if I'm honest. Is that with new spokes even if not someone's still got to unbuild the wheel before they start.
Its much quicker/cheaper for them to get a machine to build the wheel for a hand finish than for someone to manually replace the rim.
Send the bill to the local council roads department?
I've put a claim into the council but who knows where that will go

About six inches deep
Before anyone says how did you not see it, was nearly dark and heavy rain at the time so it was awash

Sounds good to me. £260 for a carbon rim that's part of a £779 wheelset sounds about right, assuming some good but not super spendy hubs. £30 for the rebuild work is cheap.

That's a nasty hole! Pot holes are at their most dangerous when there is water everywhere. For cars, not just bikes. Not your fault in any way.
300 quid seems about right if I’m honest, not that that will make you feel better when you are having to fork out on something that has broken through no real fault of your own..
speaking of fault, that pothole is ridiculous.. hitting that in a car would do serious damage. Hitting it on a bike you are lucky you only broke your rim..
Is it still the case that pothole claims pretty much rely on previous reporting/claims? Always worth a try anyway.
Will they do just the rim? Rim swapping is about as easy as wheel building/repair goes, it's actually easier than truing a bent wheel as you're not fighting it.
Gives you and idea how cheap it is for Hunt to buy from china. Good opportunity to get a different rim TBH
Hunt just buy rims from the far east, so check out the price of suitable replacement rims on AliExpress from the likes of Far Sports or Light Bicycles - match details lite hole count, rim width and ERD and you’ll be grand.

By the time you do that, pay postage and import duties then pay someone to swap it I doubt it's worth the hassle
When I was building the cutthroat the far east rims were mo cheaper than branded units with a local warranty
£200ish plus postage for a single LB rim these days, so the Hunt price doesn’t sound so bad really.
Hunts are only Chinese Menu wheels with the cheapest bearings.
front or rear rim height?
I'd be replacing the spokes while I was at it, in for a penny etc.
Interesting discussion, Hunt have now agreed to do assessment first so will see how discussion goes.....
So it's parts and labour to rebuild a thing they originally got in from a factory.
Or are they really just going to flog you a replacement front wheel?
(still not clear if this is front or rear)
Just to report Hunt have done a decent job on discount, quick turnaround and rim replacement after a bit of discussion, so kudos to them.
ps still waiting on the council insurers decision - they have had report for a few weeks now - cant see there can be any argument for paying for what is a potentially lethal pothole

doesnt it need to have been reported previously for them to have any liability?
Hi all - have received full payment from council insurance to cover full cost of repair. Hunt also opened up a decent dialogue and discount for the repair and also full serviced the hub with new bearings and a new freehub! Cant say fairer than that! Adds weight to the saying "shy boys get nowt"... 🙂
Recently managed to damage one of my carbon road bike rims on a pot hole too
Was browsing Ribble's website and they are selling off 40mm Level carbon front wheels for £100!
The rim profile and spoke count matches my damaged rim!
I bought one, stripped it down and rebuilt my damaged wheel with the Level rim
