[#4273682]

I'm just about to buy a Cotic Soul and will be using it for single track riding, including a few descents and drops etc - that tends to be the kind of stuff I ride. Hoping someone can help re hubs and rims as I'm a bit out of touch on that these days.

My current santa cruz has got a 20mm bolt through hope bulb on the front with a mavic 321 disc (doubt they make that any more!) then a hope ti glide on the back that's unfortunately non-disc. I'm going to have to unfortunately replace the back whatever happens as its non-disc. Will I have to replace the front hub? I'm buying a fox float 140mm which irritatingly seems to have a 15mm bolt through. Or does anyone know if I can get a converter to still run my 20mm bolt through bulb?

As for the back - is a hope pro 2 evo a good choice? And any ideas on a decent strong rim to replace it with?

Many Thanks
Jeremy

Time to sell your current wheels I'd have thought (don't think bulbs are convertable to 15mm) a set of pro 2s should be absolutely fine,
321s are a bit heavy and OTT for a Soul build anyway so depending on what you weigh and how you ride you could go a lot lighter.
strong and stiff and not too heavy at 570g (ish) - Mavic 721
fairly strong and reasonably stiff but 100g lighter - Stans flow
but TBH if you aren't going to be landing sideways, riding rocky trails fast or need a stiff rim for hard cornering you should be able to go for something around 400-450g like a 717/719 or another stans choice.

Hope Hoops are more than enough.

Mine are 2yrs old, pinchflatted and bang down rocks.

Thanks very much for all the advice. Sounds like I'll definitely get a set of pro 2s. Shame, I would like to re-use the front wheel, but sounds like that's not doable.

GW - I do take your point about 321s being overkill, lower weight = lower rolling resitance and all that. I've never heard of Stans and having taken a look, they seem to be tubeless so that rules that out. The Mavic 319/717 look a good bet. However, even the 319 recommends a max tyre width of 2.3 The 717 recommends a max of 2.1. Is that anything to worry about? Like a lot of people, I run High Rollers which are 2.35.

721 on a Pro 2. No messing around, does the job all the time.

I hate tubeless and drill my flows out to take normal tube valves.

719s are prob a better width for larger tyre widths than 717s either wll work tho.

Flows and other stans rims will give you the option to go tubeless, they do not need to be run tubeless from the start. Arch rims may also be worth a look if you will re-consider stans rims.

Although 719's may not state they can take 2.35 they will be fine on them. If you want to stick with Mavic the have a look at the En521.

That's great, thanks for the help.

Was a bit worried about the max tyre width, but it sounds like it doesn't matter a huge amount within reason - it's not like I'm running 3 inch tyres or anything!

narrower rims will change a larger tyres profile to a more rounded shape. and you run a higher risk of folding the sidewalls or rolling the tyre off the rim if running lower pressures.

fairly strong and reasonably stiff but 100g lighter - Stans flow

I'd go for Crest's (have 2 sets on a HT), and 130g saving each end.

I wouldn't! Flows are noticably flexy compared to 721s (especially on a hardtail) lighter weight but construction with similar material can do that.
it's good we're not all the same, eh? 😉

True, but at (only) 80kg the Crests are solid, stiff and haven't needed any truing over the past year - Scottish Borders based and HT, so you can imagine they get a reasonable beating.
