....
And gentlemen in England now a-bed
Shall think themselves accurs'd they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day.
Do I still need to think myself accurs'd if I'm in Belgium? 😥

Just 'hold your manhood' between 10 and about half 12.

I'll have to take the piss out of someone else in the car park though.
😐

Why Belgium?
Picking up some Wiggo biscuits?

Yeah, factually.

But it doesn't scan if you change it to 'The day before Mothers Day'.

What is the Flemish for 'pot Belge' btw?

I've entered but my receipt said it wasn't a guaranteed acceptance of entry into the event.

Binners- you can't have been far behind me in the last one- I came 194th!

All BC entries say that. You'll get another email that says you've been automatically accepted by the organiser.

Why Belgium?
It is at least a cycling trip. Work gang usually to to the Tour of Flanders and associated sportive, but this year it's a week earlier for the Gent Wevelgem and Harelbeke E3. Shared bedrooms, so any manhood holding will have to be done in the bog.

Right, so before I enter, am I going to either die or come last by a long and embarassing distance?
I'm 15 stone (BMI around 28), not massively fit and never raced before so not going to be hugely fast and probably going to be stopping for a rest (or five) at some point!
Please tell me I'm not alone and the majority of you are entering as a social piss about? 😯

reckon you'll fit right in - there will be proper fast folk and there will be proper slow folk, and a lot of folk in between. That's partly what makes these such great events - real inclusivity!

from the horses mouth....

The aim was to stage an event that would appeal to everyone from Nick Craig to Tony The Electrician. All you needed was a bike, a helmet and a desire to get stuck in.

I'm going to be riding a comedy 29-plus clown bike with dynamo lights and massive mudguards, and will undoubtedly spend a fair portion of the race chatting and heckling Binners instead of pedalling properly. There will be plenty of fast lads, but let them past and they'll not mind - grid yourself at the back with the rest of us donkeys and you'll be fine. 🙂

yeah, it's a social for a lot of us. one or two of the fast lads at the last race were dicks mind, and one ran me off the trail in the whoopy jumpy bit of the lower red loop in phillips park, but whatever, it's a good day and since binners, rusty spanner and myself are all in you're more or less guaranteed to not be last!

Oh yeah, I'd forgotten about them.

Remember, if you hear anyone yelling stuff like "Elite racer coming through!" that's secret XCer code for "Stick a branch in my front wheel please." 😉

I got lapped by Nick Craig, on my first lap, on the climb out of the stream.

He mumbled a resigned 'For ****'s sake' just behind me as I wobbled to a messy halt right on his line.
😀

Very civil in the circumstances, I thought.

it was probably aimed at himself for not anticipating your wobble. And the fact he probably ended up with a wet foot.

The Church Inn, Prestwich. Home of the MNPR and venue of the original HTN brain [s]fart[/s] storm back in 2006. It has B&B, is about a mile from the venue and if you ask them nicely I'm sure they will lock up your bike in a store room.

In other news, I can't make it on the 25th and I'm gutted.

True, and in years to come you will meet a random cyclist on a distant hillside and exchange "the look". Not a sound will be uttered, but you will both understand.

annnyway. Under 18s can ride as long as they're accompanied by an adult (that's you) at ALL TIMES. Obviously Richpips and Tom are ok cos they're on a tandem.
You'll also need to sign a disclaimer.
And enter the race. ]

Hope that clears things up.

Unless by some miracle it's dry between now and the 26th, if you haven't got any, I'd invest in some skinny mud tyres 😉

Bike welly boots arrived yesterday, shorty and beaver, though not sure anything short of a half track will be enough...

Binners, I'll be stopping at a great many points throughout the race to [s]cough up a lung[/s] have a natter, I may not be as sparkling a conversationalist as bunnyhop though...

Haha, I'm usually the one shouting insults as you all try to concentrate on one of the more life threatening, perilous, drops of doom.

Binners - keep our team spirit alive, I'm counting on you. How is the carbo loading coming on? Plenty of pies and pastys I hope 😀

Conditions update:

Well this morning I started my training programme in earnest. I nipped out for a jaunt and after a couple of miles my bike looked like this:

[img] [/img]

I believe the term is 'claggy'. Though this is a massive improvement on "I'm not ****ing going out there in this!", which its been for the last two weeks. Its going to be carnage! 😀

But I did manage to get my bike decked out with my sponsors logos....

[img] [/img]

Something to provide me with motivation, and keep me like TOTALLY stoked! 😀

Right... I'm off to the pub! See you tomorrow!

That sounds ace!

Is gammon, egg, chips and beans, washed down with Shiraz technically classed as carb loading? If not, then a double sausage and egg macmuffin in the morning is, right?

Unfortunately I'm not going to make it! My hip flexor went on me on Tuesday! 🙁 I'm only just able to get in & out the car without being in serious pain! The thought of riding a bike for 2 hours doesn't bear thinking about! Gutted!!

High protein, carbs and fibre, bloody hell binners, that's practically trying! Your cover is blown, I've long suspected you're actually an elite rider who's super modest before a race, then tears the legs off everyone. Even pre riding the course!

I assume your mcmuffin will be laced with something from a predelivered Tupperware box?

Guinness and steak pie with chips. That's carb loading right??
Now off? to the shop to stock up on Jelly babies to eat and share with the Marshalls on my way round (any excuse for a breather!)

Right, final race preparation completed: oiled the propellor on the small plastic aeroplane zip-tied to my helmet. I am going to look well pro. 😀

I've been marking out the course all afternoon - and I can report that the course (apart from a couple of perma-bogs) is DRY and FAST.
And I've caught the sun.

When you say FAST, you're factoring us in? I think of myself as a technical obstacle for the fast boys. A (barely) mobile chicane.
