How do you stop text alerts coming through when you are actually using the phone for a conversation?

It makes you jump!

Don't tell people your number so they can't text you?

Guess I'm not popular enough to get a call and a text at the same time as I've never noticed it do it.

annoying isn't it? Old Nokia - gentle beep to let you know something's happened. HTC - full blown message tone, making you slightly deaf/cr@p yourself!

not found the solution yet ๐Ÿ™

Make your message tone a gentle beep?

You can turn the volume of message alerts down using quick settings but I guess that just turns it down all the time. As least it's lower without lowering the ring tone as well.

Doesn't that mean that you'll never get notifications though?

same here.never hed the full msg alert tone going when on a call.i use handcent to and have disabled the notification sounds on the stock htc msg app.on handcent you have the option to either receive noise ie tone or beep while on call or disable it,not to sure about the stock msg app though.if you dont have it you should get handcent its far better and more managable.
