degreaser either applied with a chain cleaner or a paint brush and then rinse with water when i hose the bike down and then lube it with dry orwet oil conditions depending

i dont take my chain off to clean it do you?

one of my mates changes her chain every ride (she uses two chains and rotates their usage) which seems a bit of a bind to me

I've got a System. This always sounds insane when I type it out but it's really fast and easy, honest. Ingredients are one big bottle of paraffin from B&Q (£5, lasts forever), and 3 small airtight boxes from tesco (about £2 each as I went for heavy built ones with o-ring seals).

Each box is half-full of paraffin. There are 3 boxes, one's dirty, one's a bit dirty, one's fairly clean. Chain comes off, gets a quick hose then into either box 1 (if it's really manky) or box 2 (if it's just dirty). Shake shake shake. After half a minute, it comes out, and into the next box. Shake shake shake. Sometimes, I'll let it soak. By box 3, after about 4 minutes work, it's absolutely spotless- cleaner than a chain cleaning machine gets it. Then relube and refit. Every so often, the clean box gets too dirty so I ditch the dirty box and start a new clean one.

Plus, you get to burn the leftover paraffin  It does sound like a lot of work but it's really not, it only takes minutes including relubing so it's faster than trying to clean it on the bike, and the result is just perfect.

I leave mine in a tub half full of "gunk" engine cleaner.
put the top on the tub and shake it like mad for a min or two, take it out and re-lube with thin mineral oil.

BP Jet A1 aviation fuel. Basically refined paraffin. Works great, smells awful.

Really like Northwind's approach may well go to that, we currently spray with Muck Off and brush in with a toothbrush each ride, rinse off well with hose and re-lube, dry lubes on the xc/race bikes and "cross-country' wet on the DH and SS, they all look pretty much like new - they all get a good chain clean box once every two months-ish.
I have been experimenting for years, eight bikes in the house all used. A lot seems to depend on the chain lube (and a bit to do with the chain), quite liked Green Oil but very dirty and picked up so much extra muck needed lots more cleaning, wanted to like Purple chain lube but chains squeaked could get clogged (one started to rust over a race day!).

Have one of those brush contraptions that goes on. Bit of washing up liquid and water. Rinse. Then wipe with a rag and lube.

Do it most rides in winter, rarely in the dry.

when I replaced my central heating oil tank I took out about 50 litres of parafin/heating oil out of the old one.

That will last me about 20 years of chain cleaning at this rate.

Chuck it in a Park chain cleaner and it's a good 'un. Clean in 30 seconds. Dry the chain out then re-lube.
