[Closed] How strong is a steel stearer tube?

On a genesis croix de fer.

The reason for the ask is that I just tried fitting a crown race to the fork, without right tools. Basically put a big wrench over the race and tap it down with a hammer. Worked a treat, but I clearly wasn't very accurate with the hammer as there are loads of tiny 'dings'on the bottom of the stearer tube. We are talking tiny indentations about a mm wide, but you can definitely feel them.

On an alloy stearer I'd be concerned, but a steel fork weighing as much as the moon?

Can probably post pics if required

Ta

I wouldn't even be concerned on an alloy steer if the dents are 1mm

without right tools.

For future reference, bit of polly pipe is a great alternative and won't dent anything.

Put a slot in the crown race and you can press it down next time. And ease it off a lot easier too.

You've peened it. It'll be stronger now (maybe)

Whatever doesn't kill it makes it stronger.

I saw someone re-shape one of these forks, by riding into a parked car.
