I've just bought a Boardman Pro mountain bike from Halfords. I've noticed that the bottom bracket bearing seemed a bit stiff, so I took the chain off the chain ring and the span the crank, it barely managed one revolution.
Is that just a case of new bearings that need bedding in or is it faulty.

Assuming it's a HTII BB then it sounds like there's a tad too much preload across the cranks. Perhaps loosen off and reinstall if you have the tools....
Its a Truvativ Stylo GXP. Looks very similar to the HTII on my Specialized bike, although there is no plastic cap just one 8mm allen bolt.

If its new, just take it back - tell them to sort it.
Truvativ state that their BBs are slightly stiff when new and loosen up after a short run in period, claim it helps improve life (sounds like BS to me). I did notice it on mine but not to the extent you're seeing. Maybe try it for a couple of rides and take it back if it doesn't loosen up.
I think its actually an ISIS system. I managed to get the crank off by undoing the 8mm bolt which was so stiff that I had to extend it with a tube.
However even after removing the crank it was still stiff, so it would appear to be a bearing issue and not due to too much preload across the cranks.
