OK So that's got your attention, now for the realy question:
How far is your commute to work and how often do you ride it?
Mine is 12 miles and i ride in to work probably once a month although i dont think i've done it since early November. I really should ride once a week if not more. That's one of my new years revolutions although i have probably failed on it already as i haven't riden to work yet this year! D'Oh!
11 miles each way. 4 days a week in theory. Rather less recently I am ashamed to say. Sun was glorious this morning, must ride tomorrow.
I have sexual intercourse about once every 10 years.
500m never
<15m
Never
It would be 14 miles for me each way. Something I really want to do but it is nearly all on twisty narrow country lanes, and it would only be a matter of time before I got mowed down by a crazy driver.
My wife, understandably, is really against me cycling to work on these roads! Hence I've never done it!
half a mile, never.
4 timeas a week, 7 mile there, usually the long way home 20 ish miles.
Soon to be 6 miles, soon to be everyday...
Currently 1/2 mile and always walk...
11 feet (bedroom to office). Never.
3 miles, one significant hill. Shower at work if reeking (hard to get too sweatyt on so short a ride). 5 days a week. Be rude not to.
First 70 miles is by road, the next 200 over water.
Never cycled it.
(Only do it once a month though!)
2.5 miles each way. Five days a week during term-time.
My reply is almost identical to BigDummy's.
Although it's 11.5 miles and 11 years
Edit: hang on, my son is 6..?
5 miles each way ,was most days up till start of December but the has ice put a stop for the time being hopefully Feb will be better
My firm aint cycle-friendly, nowhere safe to leave the bike. Ho hum
Commute Monday to Friday. The shortest route I could take would be 3.8 miles through heavy traffic but I opt to take a longer route which is mainly off road through a country park and on cycle paths which is 6 miles long.
2 miles and I do ride to work occasionally. Taking a longer 10 mile route home through the pinewoods but to be honest by the time I have put my riding shoes on unlocked the shed unlocked the bike (3 locks) put my lid on and dodged the crazy rush hour traffic I could have walked there.
17.5miles each way, used to be up to 4 times a week, probably on average of about 2.5 times a week now.
Making a concerted effort to get back up to 3 or 4 times a week regularly.
A new bike will motivate me nicely...
7.42 miles. 3-4 days out of 6 usually, but today was my first time this year due to weather, needing the car for stuff etc
I start at 7am, so I don't do it every day (It was LETHAL in the ice recently, for instance. Some of the roads are unlit back lanes...)
When I work in the office (not that often) it is 12.5 miles (across London) and I do it 2 or perhaps 3 times a week. I get bored doing the same urban ride every day.
8 miles each way x2 per week. Have to pass three schools just crazy how those parents park and behave.
6 miles each way, on the road bike. A bit further if I take the MTB and offroad it on the way home.
I do it about 3-4 days a week. Saves me a fortune in car parking, not to mention the hassle of my constant quest for car parking change.
It varies as I work n different sites around the city 2 - 6 miles each way. 3 times a week on average.
12 miles each way an average of 3 times per week, more in summer lot less in winter.
6 miles each way. All off road - every day.
For me its 10 miles each way & i'll be onto it when the clocks change ๐
2ft. My desk is next to my bed! I can literally swivel round in my chair, and roll into bed. I do 'commute' to the kitchen, though; well, I used to , but now one of the wheels on the chair is borked, so it won't roll properly, now. ๐
My teaching job is only about 2 miles away, and 7-8 mins by bike.

I'll phone Jeremy Kyle, ๐
dezB - as long as I don't get a phot of him graduating in a few years time then I am okay with that
20 miles each way and I do it 3-5 times a week, although it's not very often I'm in the office for a full week so on average 3 times a week. The darkness is staring to get to me now, the first 2 months are fine but January is hard. Can't wait untill mid March so I can get in to and home from work in daylight.
9 miles each way. In the summer I pretty much ride it 4 out of 5 days (1 day a week on call so need the car) Winter is when weather allows!
well after all you guys who commute or walk the 2 feet to work i rode in today, first time this year. I'm a bit pooped now. must make it a regular thing. Gonna try for twice this week to see if it spurs me on to carry on and then maybe i'll get up to 4 or so times a week in the summer.
bit disappointed. jst checked on multimap and ita says 7 miles. i was thinking it was more like 15....
not riding it yet but will be the whole of feb. this is feb in munich with ice on the ground, really ****ing cold mornings and snow. fogive me if i take the train once in a while.
how long should 7 miles take at a reasonable pace?
J
well my 12 miles at an easy pace was 55 mins this morning but back in summer when i did it once a week, it took between 44 and 50 so i suppose 7 miles will be half hour.
10 miles each way. all down hill and flat there and the op home. there is a 20% climb just near home to finnish me off. 3 days a week. dec and jan down to 1!
0 for 1 day
10 for 3 days
40 for 1 day
thinking of making the 40 for 2 days at the expense of a 10
18 miles each way. Usually 3 times a week, but I'm going for the full 5 days this week. Thankfully it's fairly flat except a short but very painful 12% section near Styal. Quickest time so far (since November) is 1 hr and 4 minutes for the return leg. Once the weather improves, I'll dust off the proper road bike and see if I can get it below the hour mark.
5 miles each way. 5 days a week, whatever the time of year.
I'd rather it was futher, TBH, as there isn't really any fitness benefit cycling such a short distance.
a short but very painful 12% section near Styal.
Presumably on the way out of Wilmslow on the Styal road? That's only a tiddler - just take a run up.
Surely theres a fitness benefit?
3 days a week = 8.5 miles each way (SS)
1 day a week = 17 miles each way (SS)
1 day a week = night ride approx 16 - 20 miles (geared FS)
1 day at weekend = 20 mile off road (geared FS)
Hmm seems a reasonable aount when you write it down ๐
From the house it would be 18 miles each way, but I have to drop the kids at school 7 miles away so I put the bike in the car, park there and ride the 11 to and from the office.
I'd do it more often if it wasn't part of my work to go out to client's houses and it wasn't such a geographically large 'patch'. I try and plan an 'office' based day once a week and ride in. If I plan my client visits well and have a day close to the office, I will ride in and go between client visits on the bike. I do that less often as it's a faff.
brack - I wasn't clear. What I meant was: it doesn't *add* to fitness (unless I use it as interval training, in which case my legs just ache 7 days a week).
About 18-20 miles each way would be ideal. That would be 180-200 miles a week, which would definitely have a fitness benefit. I can see that in a friend who, as aresult of his 18 mile each way daily commute is as stong as an Ox and already pretty fit at this time of year. I'm not looking forward to him giving me a battering on tonight's street-lit road ride!
18 mailes each way try to do it twice a week , but a bit less since christmas
45 miles - at the moment I cycle about 3 (if that) and catch the train for the rest. I'm thinking about going in the car most of the way with my husband and cycling the remaining 18 miles.
Leftyboy - how long does it take you to do 18 miles on your ss and what ratio are you running and how hard do you ride??
I like the fact that accordingly to ourmaninthenorth I could be as strong as an Ox if I did it everyday! (the idea of it is much funnier if you know me!) The only thing is I don't want to spend hours doing it everyday...
10 miles each way, four times a week, 75% of it off road. Only howling gales really put me off (or this week where they've turned off the showers to get rid of things that should not be.)
