wondered if having had my new bike and thus wheels for six months and around 500miles ,whether the spokes would need a retensioning tweek? (by a lbs- i cant do that stuff) im thinking things stretch and all that and want to keep them tight and true.there also not mega expensive ritchey wcs series so dont know if it matters more/less??

When they're loose. Give them a squeeze.

Good, handbuilt wheels shouldn't need retensioning, as the spokes would have been sufficiently tense that they couldn't vibrate loose over time.

I wouldn't expect basic stock wheels to be handbuilt, although a nice mechanic might have had a quick look at them before they left the shop.

If you're not sure, go round the wheel, one side at a time, squeezing the parallel spokes (not the crossed ones). If any feel significantly looser than their neighbours, the wheel definitely needs a bit of attention.

If they all feel the same, and the wheel is still nice and straight, you should be OK. If they all feel the same but the wheel is wobbling all over the place, it would also warrant some attention.

Depends how good your wheels / spokes are, who built them and how much of a hammering you give them.

Currently riding a pair of DT swiss wheels / hubs built by Merlin & they haven't been touched in over a years twice weekly riding - and they've been chucked down everything. Mr Merlin build pretty good wheels I reckon ๐Ÿ˜‰

I would say need to be checked after every ride. Obviously not the same pounding taken as on my motocross bike, but I still treat the mountain bike the same.

Just get a spoke spanner and tap each spoke in turn, they should not sound dull. You'd hear the difference between a slack one a tort one. When adjusting you then need to adjust the opposite spoke to the one you have adjusted, not the one next to it.

Or just wait until they snap...up to you.. ๐Ÿ˜†
