I've recently had some expenses for the bike, and it got me thinking how much does a bike ride actually cost. I know that there are other more expensive sports, but that's not really the point. I used a fairly basic formula with some very 'finger in the air' figures, which can be adjusted to your own circumstances, but the results were a bit surprising when you break it down to a 'per ride' basis.
1 bike at £2k every 5 years = £400 PA
Spare parts = £400 PA
Clothes = £300 PA
Trail food / snacks = £100 PA
Cafe stops / parking = £100 PA
Fuel costs = £50 PA
Total PA £1350.
Assume 2 rides per week = £11 per ride.
What does yours come out at, and do you care?
spare parts £400 pa 😯
I don't care 😀
If it was £11 a ride, it'd be £11 well spent!
Fuel costs = £50 PA
Not travelling far then...
fuel costs are considerably more than £50 per year... and I don't tend to drive to ride all that often.
We went and stayed with a friend in Wales to ride this weekend, that will have used about quarter of a tank of fuel ~£20, and that was only one weekend.
Dave
Maybe £750 a year all in including France. So about a tenner a go which is fine.
Most of that is fuel. I reckon I'll buy a cassette, two chainrings and a chain once a year and maybe 4 sets of pads. Clothes seem to go on forever but I did buy a new (to me) frame this year.
I expect I spend more than that, and ride less, so my cost per ride is.........lots
Don't really mind to be honest
Better to ask "How much does not having a bike ride cost you?" 😉
I think spare parts at £400 is fairly conservative TBH.
2 sets of tyres can easily come to £100.
Suspension service £100.
Complete drivetrain replacement £120.
Cables etc. £20
Brake blocks £40?
Thats already £380, throw in tools or any other random bits that need replacing from time to time like BB's, headset bearings and you'll easily hit £400
Clothes = £300 PA
Not sure if that makes you some sort of metrosexual or me some sort of scruff.
You must do some mileage to get through all that!! 😯
Clothes are pretty much a rolling cost, if you're lucky a waterproof will keep you going for 3 years at about £100 before it de-laminates / leaks / gets holes ripped in it, maybe a new soft-shell every few years? Everything else pretty much a complete new summer and winter outfit each year as stuff wears out / you see something you like.
No idea, don't care. Every bike ride is an investment in my physical and mental health that will more than pay me back in years to come. 🙂
2 sets of tyres a year ? , I get 2-3 years out of summer tyres and don't expect my winter mudx to ever wear out at the way they have lasted so far, on the 4th summer on the current drive, BB & cables (though they are getting a bit sticky). Self service forks costs around £20 a year. So it's costing me less than £100 pa.
i've spent mopre than £50 on fuel this month already. and i normally ride local.
Don't care, probably a lot more than £11, but I can't take it with me so even if its £100 its still well spent.
I save £60 a month gym membership every time I ride.
taken for one of my bikes - the road bike, which is 2 years old.
Bought for £1000 + £100 upgrades
Spares - spokes, tyres £20
Use it at least twice a week from April->Nov, so call it 7 months which would make about 60 rides.
So, so far it's cost me £10 a ride (all from the front door). There's at least another 2 years out of it before money needs spending on drivetrain, so, I'd say about £5 a ride.
Its fuel for me. I tend not to be reasonably light on my kit.
Say I do 30 rides a year that I need £20 in fuel to get to thats £600 factor in another £100 for the two much longer trips for races. Thats £700 in fuel. Lets call parts and clothing £300 so £1000 a year for maybe 50 rides (1 a week) Thats £20 a ride.
BUT
I save £5 in petrol whenever I cycle to work so as long as a cycle to work often enough I'll be quids in!
Clothes = £300 PA
not even close
2 x cheapo on-one jerseys is my tally for the year, I won't need any next year
Shorts last 3 - 4 years
don't use waterproofs
I'm looking at ~£4 a ride.. which I still think is a bit expensive..
I must make sure that I ride more..
Fuel is my biggest cost too. A trip to Dalby will use £30 worth.
I replace clothing when its worn out, and always with sale stuff.
Saying that, my total ride cost for the K100 was around £250
Was/is it worth it? Every penny.
Single ride in the Dark Peak on a filthy wet day must be good for a fair few quids worth of bits.
Saying that, my total ride cost for the K100 was around £250
+1
what makes it worse is i never even finished 😆
I've erased Kielder from my memory
I've worked out my ride(s) cost me about £8.00ish all in excl anything other than bike stuff.
I've a roadie and 2 MTB's and a cummuter BTW.
I change bikes every couple of years (though the Lefty has been with me for 4 now). I ride 4 times a week twice on the MTB (sometimes 3) and at least one on the roadie. Commuting doesn't really count as it's only a couple of miles to the station.

Only till next year.....
Only till next year.....
After 2 failed attempts, I've decided it's bigger than I am
TBH it was only brake failure that stopped me this year, don't know if I'd have made the full 100 though
It struck me recently that the price of four gels to ride the hilly 50mile route to my parents is only slightly cheaper than getting the train down.
Yip. Ride any bike through a Lancashire winter and you can budget on a complete new drive chain including bottom bracket, a lot of brake pads, and if your daft enough to ride a full-suss then its going to really cost.
Last few years I've found it cheaper to just buy a cheap hardtail frame. Actually cheaper than replacing all the bearings and bushes on a full suss
Bike was about 600 second hand. Rollers were 200. Other spares, maybe electrolyte, 50 a year. Fuel approx 40 per ride. Hotel around 100 per ride.
Reckon I'll get 20 rides out here. So 850/20 = 42.5 per ride plus 40 in fuel and 100 for hotel.
So about 182 pounds 50 pence per ride. 😯 😥
Depends on the ride.
Local night ride on the singlespeed costs practicly nothing.
- ride from the door
- Singlespeed has had no maintenance since this time last year apart from re-greasin the hub bearsings (yes, imcluding brake pads!)
- only mechanical has been the los of the cranks end cap - £5
All parts bought 2nd hand, so I'll lose almost no money if I sell them.
Specialized Pitch on the other hand is becoming a money pit! But that should level out once the crap OEM shit has been replaced. Biggest cost of riding that is definately fuel. I also ride it localy which costs next to nothing as I won't bother if its raining or I'll take the SS if it's muddy.
And fuel doesn't count, I ride wherever I happen to be, so I won't count that towards biking, that's socializing with friends (kielder and the peaks) going to see the missus (swinely) or grandparents (lakes and dales).
So the incremental cost of going for a ride is minimal for me. It's the fixed costs that add up! And no one's counted so far..........
House - if it wasn't for bikes I'd probably house share at say £300/month, not £500 rent for house + garrage, and £100 C.tax, £100 bills. So that's £500 a month right there!
I'd have a smaller car so it's probably buy diesel with the same money, so that's probaly at least £50 a month in excess fuel on non bikey trips where the cars essentialy empty.
Factor in racing and the cost goes up very very fast... petrol, entry fee, hotel, dinner, breakfast, energy drink, licence, nearing £100 per race average I reckon! Offset quite nicely by all the riding I do from my house, but even so, suspect it's more than £10 per (MTB) ride easily. If nothing else, bike is £3k+ PA, although I always sell for what I paid, so it's effectively cost neutral.

That's a good shout, I always think that. Being daaan saaaf you can near double that rent too, and take away the garage! But yes, would be more inclined to have a 1 bed house not 2 if there weren't many bikes stored in it!
